Sacrificial Spell (3.5e Spell)

[[3e Summary::In times of need you may require the use of a spell that you don't have on hand. A wizard or sorcerer may cast this to duplicate the effects of any other spell they known or have prepared, up to 9th level spells.]] The spell does not even have to be available. If you have used up all your Fireballs for the day, you may cast this to cast additional Fireballs. You cannot use this to cast a spell you did not prepare this day (or know, if a sorcerer). Casting time is the same as the duplicated spell, as well as any XP costs, and material components.

This ability does not come without cost however, as the caster takes 2d6 points of backlash damage per level of the spell duplicated from casting. The caster cannot somehow avoid or make him or her self immune to backlash damage. For spells with durations longer than instantaneous, the backlash damage is per round. If backlash damage kills a caster, no spell or method exists that will return life to the caster’s body without costing the caster a level—not even wish, true resurrection, miracle, or epic spells that return life to the deceased. Spells that normally penalize the recipient one level when they return him or her to life penalize a caster killed by backlash two levels.

It is important to remember not to cast spells with a permanent duration instead of instantaneous, as it quickly leads to endless damage.

gollark: That doesn't mean that the languages they are using aren't horrible, or at least more horrible than is possible.
gollark: It's not better. It's more popular.
gollark: Yes, they can technically workaround some of the pure horror of this, but it's going to be much more annoying than not doing that.
