Ring, artifact (requires attunement)

Design Note: This item uses the Lycanthrope Overhaul variant rule.

An ancient ring of cryptic origins. The metal used to create the ring has an earthy feel to it, and holding the ring in your hand causes your hands to be engulfed in warmth. Many who are afflicted by the lycanthropy disease search for this ring to be rid of their curse once and for all. Others seek it for its ability to give control to the user, providing lycanthropes with the confidence to think of their transformations as more of a blessing than a curse.

Primal Humanity. If you are a lycanthrope, you receive the following benefits while you are attuned to the Ring of the Lycanthrope:

  • You can use the Shapechanger feature as a bonus action.
  • The "Bloodlust" rule no longer applies to you.
  • Control over your character isn't surrendered to your DM due to the "Emotionally Unstable" rule nor the rules regarding transformation under a full moon.
  • You can use an action to permanently change your humanoid form's physical appearance to its original state before becoming a lycanthrope, even if you remove your attunement to this ring. If you choose to do so, other creatures will not perceive you as a lycanthrope unless magic is used to identify your curse.

Nature's Forgiveness. If a lycanthrope is attuned to this ring, they can spend 1d4 hours in complete stillness and meditation to remove their lycanthropy curse, regardless if they are a lycanthrope by birth. Creatures that cure themselves of lycanthropy this way are permanently immune to the lycanthropy curse afterwards, regardless of any spells, features, or effects that may be inflicted onto them in the future. After using this feature, you cannot attune to the Ring of the Lycanthrope again, and it detonates, dealing 1d12 fire damage to the user and all creatures within 5 feet of them.

Moonlight Curse. If you aren't a lycanthrope, haven't used the Nature's Forgiveness feature, and are attuned to this ring, you can spend 1d4 hours in complete stillness and meditation to permanently become any type of lycanthrope. Creatures that become a lycanthrope through this feature cannot remove their lycanthropy curse, regardless of any spells, features, or effects that affect them in the future. If you are already a lycanthrope, you cannot use this feature to change into a different type of lycanthrope. After using this feature, you cannot attune to the Ring of the Lycanthrope again, and it detonates, dealing 1d12 fire damage to the user and all creatures within 5 feet of them.

Destroying the Ring of the Lycanthrope. The ring will explode if the Moonlight Curse or Nature's Forgiveness feature is used. The ring will also crumble into a pile of dust if the user of the ring is incapacitated while in meditation due to the Moonlight Curse and Nature's Forgiveness features.

Reconstructing the Ring of the Lycanthrope. After it is destroyed, the Ring of the Lycanthrope can be reconstructed by enchanting a normal ring while holding the fur, feather, or scale of a lycanthrope on the night of a full moon. The person performing the enchantment must make a DC 15 Arcana skill check to succeed. Additionally, the person who performs the enchantment must have attuned to the Ring of the Lycanthrope before, otherwise the enchantment will fail. If the enchantment is successful, the ordinary ring used in the spell will glow with an eerie white light, consume the lycanthrope part, and transform into the Ring of the Lycanthrope. After the ring is reconstructed, the Nature's Forgiveness and Moonlight Curse features cannot be used until one week passes. Due to the magical properties and the enchantments cast on the ring by generations of spell-casters, there can only be one Ring of the Lycanthrope in existence at a time.
