Point Buy, But Better! (5e Variant Rule)

Point Buy, But Better

So point buy is weird, right? 27 points? Why isn't it 30? Highest is a 15 you can buy. Why isn't it a 16? These things allow for a lot of uneven numbers and worse, allow for only a maximum score of 17, but an optimal score of 2 16s instead. This is simply too low in my opinion, and if you share that opinion, then this expansion of the existing system should help things be more evenly spread in your games.

The existing table costs remain the same, but in this new system players can buy a 16 score with 10 points, a 17 score with 12 points, and an 18 score with 15 points. Combine that with a total points of 40 or 45 (Much crisper numbers) and everything is much higher but more even with what rolling scores can give players. This creates the following new Standard Point Arrays of 17, 16, 14, 13, 12, 10 (With 40 points), or 18, 16, 15, 13, 12, 10 (With 45 points).

DM Note: The higher scores can change how easy the game is, and may require re-balancing encounters across your whole game. This alteration, though simple in nature, should not be taken lightly, as it will inevitably affect the entire game in some way, either by making it all easier if nothing is changed, or possibly making you overcorrect and make it ultimately harder.
