Weapon(mace), rare (requires attunement)

This magical mace has the power to bind other creatures into serving its owner’s will.

Ornate Splendour. This mace looks ornate and extremely gaudy, inlaid with gold and precious stones and with a chain of glittering coins snaking off it. While this appearance would suggest that the mace is little more than a ceremonial weapon, the enchantments placed upon it mean that it can be used effectively in combat. You have a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Sealing the Deal. While the mace can be used for combat, its primary purpose is a ceremonial oneof sorts. Whenever a creature strikes a bargain, swears an oath, signs a contract or makes any other sort of spoken or written agreement with another creature while in physical contact with the mace, the weapon casts the geas spell on that creatureobliging it to hold up its end of the deal. The creature automatically fails its saving throw against the effect. This geas lasts indefinitely or until its task is completed, rather than the usual time limit of the spell. Constructs and undead are unaffected by this ability. The attuned creature can also choose to be unaffected.

Bond of Exchange. Giving the mace to another creature may seem a gift, but it holds an unusual curse. The attuned creature is aware if any other creature is willingly holding or wearing the mace. If a creature other than the attuned creature holds the mace in this manner for one minute or longer, the mace casts the geas spell on that creature, with a DC equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier or your spell save DC, whichever is higher. Should the creature fail the save it is obliged to complete a task of the attuned creature’s choice. This geas lasts indefinitely or until the task is completed, rather than the usual time limit of the spellhowever it is broken early if the attuned creature reclaims the mace and holds onto it for one minute or more. If another non-attuned creature willingly holds the mace for one minute or more, the geas is transferred to them. Constructs and undead are unaffected by this ability.

Orzhov Associations. If you’re playing a campaign set on Ravnica (as detailed in the Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica sourcebook) the mace of obligation is a magical item very popular amongst the Orzhov Syndicate. High ranking clerics of the Orzhov frequently carry the weaponusing it to ensure that their suffering debtors remain true to their bargains and don’t attempt to get out of paying their eternal debt. A mace of obligation might even be given as a ‘gift’ from a canny Orzhov pontiff to a representative of another guild who doesn’t realise until it’s too late that the mace is far too valuable not to come with a heavy price tag.
