A gryph-hound is a hybrid of eagle and dog with the ability to understand speech in the Common tongue and in Elvish. Some humanoids train them as war beasts, and some Small races have been known to ride them into battle. Pack Hunters. Found in thick forests and often on the edge where fey forests and normal meet, gryph-hounds hunt in packs, normally numbering between five to fifteen members, with the largest and strongest being the pack leader. Much like wolves, gryph-hounds work in groups to hunt down their pray, but unlike wolves gryph-hounds will not stalk pray that has managed to fend them off, even if they could come back later to finish it off. Incredible Loyalty. Gryph-hounds are very loyal to their pack, and will fight to the death to defend their nests. This loyalty has made them very prized as hunting hounds, for royalty and nobles alike, as owning a gryph-hound is seen as being a great honour in and of itself. Variant: Winged Gryph-houndSome gryph-hounds have wings that resemble those of eagles. A winged gryph-hound has a flying speed of 50 feet. |
