Carbuncles are foxlike denizens of the upper planes notable for their gleaming coats and their insatiable curiosity. They can occasionally be found exploring the material plane, either of their own initiative or as the familiars of mages. Fantastical Fox. A carbuncle resembles a fox with a blunted muzzle, large ears, three bushy tails, and a sleek fur coat that glitters like crystal when it catches the light. Their fur comes in a variety of often fantastical colours, such as ruby, topaz, or emerald. Whatever the shade of its coat may be, every carbuncle sports a bright red gemstone on its brow, which is said to have healing properties. Vulpine Familiars. Carbuncles are compelled to explore new and unfamiliar places by their insatiable curiosity, and will happily put up with anyone who provides them the opportunity so long as they aren’t abusive or cruel. This makes them easy to summon and an ideal choice of familiar for an inexperienced mage. Carbuncles may be summoned with the find familiar spell. |
