Traditional dowsing rods were constructed from a Y shaped branch which would, when grasped by the two splayed ends, tug towards the nearest source of water. Since their inception, dowsing rods have been constructed from a variety of materials in the hopes of divining for other, more sort after resources such as precious metals and gemstones.
