A clamshell haltija is a forest spirit born from the collective power of the ghosts of animals slaughtered for clothing and driven by their anger and fear. It appears as a mass of fur and leather, with down and feathers stuffed in between; it is roughly shaped like a songbird, with an egg-like body and two teardrop-shaped flaps to either side. Where its neck and head would be is a metal object, similar to a beartrap set to open vertically: a pair of curved, hinged bands with dozens of rusty metal spikes pointing inwards. The "teeth" are much longer than usual for an animal trap, preventing it from closing fully.
These beings exist to seek vengeance for countless violent deaths; although they will sometimes hunt forest travellers wearing excessiev fur, they are only dimly aware of the fate their bodies went to and mainly target poachers and trappers. They divebomb their prey with little to no warning, using their "jaws" to rip off strips of surface tissue. Often content to leave after a handful of successful attacks, they respond aggressively to attempts at retaliation and will destroy itself without hesitation trying to bring down more powerful creatures which try to defend themselves.

gollark: Is there a list of existing badge things somewhere?
gollark: Yes (UTC).
gollark: It should be vaguely doable with Markov chains for text and a large library of graphics.
gollark: Maybe I should somehow procedurally generate badges like that.
gollark: I HAVE just contributed to zzcxz somewhat.
