Battle Mage

Combat Magic

Battle mages are magic users that use their magic as a weapon in battle, casting spells that deal damage to their opponents. They have a connection to the elements that make up the world around them, and channel this energy through specially forged gauntlets that are made to harness this magic.

Creating a Battle Mage

Quick Build

You can make a Battle Mage quickly by following these suggestions. First, Intelligence should be your highest ability score, followed by Dexterity. Second, choose the sage background. Third, choose melee weapon, studded leather and net, explorer's pack.

Class Features

As a Battle Mage you gain the following class features.

Hit Points

Hit Dice: 1d8 per Battle Mage level
Hit Points at 1st Level: 8 + Constitution modifier
Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d8 (or 5) + Constitution modifier per Battle Mage level after 1st

Proficiencies

Armor: Light armor, Medium Armor
Weapons: Simple and martial melee weapons that do not have the two-handed property, darts, slings, nets
Tools: One type of tool set/kit, based on subclass
Saving Throws: Dexterity, Intelligence
Skills: Choose two from Arcana, History, Survival, Perception, Insight, and Acrobatics

Equipment

You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background:

  • (a) a melee weapon without the two-handed property or (b) a dart or (c) a sling
  • (a) studded leather armor and a net or (b) scale mail armor
  • (a) a dungeoneer's pack or (b) an explorer's pack
  • a gauntlet forged to harness magical energies

Spellcasting

Drawing on the very essence of the magic around you, you have learned to harness this energy to cast spells. See below for the battle mage spell list.

Cantrips

At 1st level, you know one cantrip of your choice from the battle mage spell list. You learn additional battle mage cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Battle Mage table. When you level up as a battle mage, you can replace one cantrip you know with another one on the battle mage spell list.

Preparing and Casting Spells

The Battle Mage table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your battle mage spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these battle mage spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.

You prepare the list of battle mage spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the battle mage spell list. When you do so, choose a number of battle mage spells equal to your Intelligence modifier + your battle mage level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
You can also change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of battle mage spells requires time spent honing your connection to your gauntlet: at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list.

Spellcasting Ability

Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for your battle mage spells, since your magic draws upon your knowledge of the magical energies around you. You use your Intelligence whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Intelligence modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a battle mage spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

;Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier
;Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier

Ritual Casting

You can cast a battle mage spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell prepared.

Spellcasting Focus

You use your magical gauntlet as a spellcasting focus for your battle mage spells.

Mage Gauntlet

At 1st level, you chose a gauntlet. Choose between Frostborn, Conduit, Pyromancer, Toxicologist, Stoneshaper, and Tempest, all detailed at the end of the class description. Your choice grants you features at 1st level, and again at levels 7, 11, 15, and 19.

Ability Score Improvement

When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.

Frostborn

A Frostborn battle mage uses the frost element through their gauntlet, putting accuracy and precision above speed and agility in combat. <!-For subclasses introduce this class option here->

Ice Lance

<!-Class feature game rule information-> Your magical gauntlet is imbued with the frost element. You can concentrate on it to prepare a powerful spell. You can cast ice knife without using a spell slot, and instead using 2 mana charges. For each round that you concentrate on the spell, it takes 1 extra mana charge. Refer to the table below for damage dealt depending on mana charges used.
