Languages

Common languages

Common languages comprise those spoken by mankind. Every player should be able to speak at least 1 of the following.

  • Middish - A combination between real world English and French, Middish is considered a flowery, confusing language to outsiders. It uses Gaiseric script, an in-universe counterpart to the English alphabet.
  • Tudorian - A combination between real world German and Russian, Tudorian is considered very utilitarian, aggressive, and plain. It uses Gaiseric script, an in-universe counterpart to the English alphabet.
  • Kushanese - A combination between real world Hindi and Chinese, Kushanese strikes a middle-ground between the natures of Middish and Tudorian. It uses Ganishkan script, an in-universe counterpart to the Devanagari script.

Exotic Languages

Exotic languages comprise those spoken by Interstitial beings. Very few players, or people in the Physical World in general, are able to speak the following, but many of the creatures beyond do.

  • Mer - Spoken by the merrow, Mer as a spoken language consists of rhythmic pitch changes, with meaning being derived from the distance between and length of pitches rather than the pitches themselves. When written, Mer resembles [Kaidā glyphs].
  • Harpy - Spoken by harpies, Harpy consists of clicking sounds made in the throat, short bursts of vocalization, and clicks made with the tongue and teeth. Harpy has no written form.
  • Jötunn - Spoken by jötnar, Jötunn resembles the grunts of sailors and the hoots of apes. When written, it resembles [gregg shorthand].
  • Gnoll - Spoken by goblins, ogres, and trolls, Gnoll consists of screeches and roars meant to instill concepts and emotions, rather than a true, formalized language. Gnoll does not have a written form.

Supreme Languages

Supreme languages draw from the fundamental aspects of intelligence in all, or at least a wide range of creatures. Almost no creatures, much less players, should know the following.

  • Elfin - Spoken primarily by elves, Elfin can be understood by any creature native to the pre-Great Roar Interstice. Creatures from beyond the interstice only hear an overlapping of voices. Elfin writing can automatically be read by Interstitial beings, and resembles [Hangul].
  • Beast-Speak - This language can be understood by all beasts. When spoken, non-beasts hear complete silence. Beasts can speak Beast-Speak, but only beasts of the same species and non-beasts that know Beast-Speak can understand them. Beast-Speak does not have a written form.
  • Soul Speak - Spoken by the rare human capable of communing with the dead, Soul Speak can be understood by all humans, regardless of if they are undead. Creatures that are not human only hear a sound similar to Elfin.
  • Abyssal - Spoken only by beings of the deepest layers of the Astral Realm, Abyssal can be understood by all creatures. It has no written form.
