This page is of questionable balance. Reason: A backsword is effectively a hatchet-point rapier. You can always just flavor your rapier to have a hatchet point. The hatchet point does not change the weapon, properties sufficiently either: the only difference being that a hatchet-point doesn't thrust necessarily as well as a spear-point some of the time.

Evolved from the broad sword, these swords have a straight single-edged blade and a hilt with a single-handed grip. They have a flat back edge, producing a triangular cross-section. Later examples of backswords often have a "false edge" on the back near the tip, which was frequently sharpened into an actual edge to facilitate thrusting attacks.

Back swords are simple and cheap to produce, and were favored by infantry and irregulars for their simple use and general effectiveness.
