Elkies' p5 first occurred naturally in a soup found by Dave Greene using Adam P. Goucher's apgsearch program in April 2015.[1] Other efforts from apgsearch allowed a 15-glider synthesis of an 18-cell still life which can be converted to Elkies' p5. This 20-glider synthesis was completed by Brett Berger and Martin Grant.[2] This was further improved to 8 gliders by Brett Berger and Martin Grant[3] following a second natural occurrence in January 2016.[4]

Commonness

On Catagolue, it is the third most common period 5 oscillator, after octagon II and fumarole.[5]

gollark: It's annoying how *hard* it is to get people to actually release vulnerabilities they find in potatOS.
gollark: Like when I happily spend hours reverse-engineering an obfuscated potatOS exploit and patching it ,for instance.
gollark: Also, I can randomly be extremely productive on entirely worthless projects nobody ever needs.
gollark: Me too, except possibly more than three hours.
gollark: Preemptive multithreading, while technically possible in certain environments, is not presently being worked on.
