58P5H1V1

58P5H1V1 is an unnamed c/5 diagonal spaceship discovered by Matthias Merzenich on September 5, 2010. In terms of its minimum population of 58 cells it is the smallest known c/5 diagonal spaceship. It provides sparks at its trailing edge which can perturb gliders, and this property was used to create the first c/5 diagonal puffers. These sparks also allow the attachment of tagalongs which was used to create the first c/5 diagonal wickstretcher in January 2011.[1] A period-1540 glide-symmetric three-ship puffer was discovered by Peter Naszvadi in March 2020.[2]

The final step for a glider synthesis of this spaceship was found by Goldtiger997 and Tanner Jacobi on April 2, 2020.[3] Goldtiger997 posted a complete 220-glider synthesis, including the base still life, on the next day,[4] making 58P5H1V1 the first spaceship of its speed to be synthesized. Reductions to the synthesis have since been made.[5][6][7][8] A 58P5H1V1 gun with period 2760 was posted by Entity Valkyrie on May 22.[9]

Goldtiger997 constructed a 1G seed for 58P5H1V1 on July 7, 2020.[10] A version of this seed constellation was soon proven to be glider-constructible, opening up the possibility of self-constructing spaceships with diagonal speeds approaching c/5, where the previous limit had been c/12 with the use of constructible Corderships.

gollark: > One inadequately solved design problem was the need for heavy shielding to protect the crew and those on the ground from acute radiation syndrome; other potential problems included dealing with crashes.[2] ah yes.
gollark: That is not much of an issue. The carbon dioxide production from them is. If we ran out somehow, it would be possible to synthesize more (with energy input, obviously).
gollark: Also, I think there are some nuclear plane concepts? Generally they use the heat from the nuclear stuff directly in some way.
gollark: This is probably far beyond the life expectancy of a plane.
gollark: > And also if you have a kerosene powered plane it will become useless in however many years when a drop of oil costs $100
