Young Dracula/Characters
The Draculas
Vladimir Dracula
Actor: Gerran Howell
Vlad: Being a vampire sucks.
Zoltan: Isn't that rather the point?
The main character of Young Dracula, Vlad is the son and heir of Count Dracula, as well as being the Chosen One. Unforunately for his father, all Vlad wants to be is a normal human boy. Vlad's desires result in a rejection of vampiric ways and the befreinding of "breathers", particularly Robin and Erin. Despite this, Vlad cares greatly for his family and, as the series progresses, becomes more confident in his role.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Vlad fits the trope for Ingrid.
- Anti-Anti-Christ: The vampires' long awaited Chosen One.
- Badass Cape: Usually when he is around other vampires or when he is going to use his vampire powers.
- Berserk Button: Want to have the Chosen One hunting you down? Threaten his family or friends.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Vlad is normally the nicest vampire when it come to breathers. Then the slayers use Ingrid as bait, nearly killing her several times. The result left a pair of hard-core slayers speechless and terrified.
- Beware the Honest Ones: None of the vampires seem to get Vlad, culminating in Dracula's "over my dead body" when Vlad declares he's going to get Ingrid. Interestingly, the slayers predicted he would, meaning that humans understand Vlad better than his own kind.
- The Chosen One: Vlad in season 2.
- Deadpan Snarker
- The Fettered
- Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: What Vlad wants his family to be.
- Horrible Judge of Character: At least, when it came to Boris post-transformation. Possibly more a Willing Suspension of Disbelief on Vlad's part.
- Many of the other characters think that Vlad is this, as he often trusts those who would kill him, like Ingrid or the Van Helsings.
- I Hate You Vampire Parents: Vlad has touches of this at times. Far worse with Magda than with the Count.
- I Just Want to Be Normal
- Magnificent Bastard: In series 3.
- Only Sane Man: When compared with other vampires, at least.
- Reluctant Warrior
- This Is Your Brain on Evil: Episode 3x08. Mere words cannot describe the awesomeness.
- Took a Level in Badass: Between seasons 2 and 3, and again during 3x09.
- White Sheep
Count Dracula
Actor: Keith-Lee Castle.
The father of Vlad and Ingrid, Count Dracula adores being a Vampire and cannot understand Vlad's lack of enthusiasm. While the Count claims to be "the Prince of Darkness", he often shows compassion and frequently ignores Vampire convention, such as assosiating with humans. The Count desires to make Vlad into his true heir, and is frequently dissapointed with his son's desire to be normal. He ignores Ingrid because she's a girl.
- Abusive Parents: Shows blatant favouritism for Vlad over Ingrid, even though Ingrid is the one who acts like a proper vampire.
- It could be argued that he's also abusive to Vlad based on his inability to accept that Vlad isn't a younger copy of himself, but it's much less blatant than his abuse of Ingrid.
- Badass Longcoat: Part of his "breather" look
- Card-Carrying Villain
- Even Evil Has Standards: Despite it all, there does seem to be some lines the Count won't cross.
- Fully-Embraced Fiend
- Historical In-Joke: Tends to be the focus of them.
- I Hate You Vampire Daughter
- I Love You, Vampire Son: He really does care about Vlad, albeit in his twisted way, and actually was genuinely worried for him in the series 2 finale.
- Also, he's notably the only family member who seems to like Vlad.
- Pivotal Wakeup
- Vampires Are Sex Gods: The actor, Keith-Lee Castle, is pretty attractive.
- Hot Dad
Ingrid Dracula
Actress: Clare Thomas
"You're a heartless, spiteful, self-centred bully... and so am I but you just can't see it!"
Vlad's attractive older sister. One of the most self-assured and cruel characters, Ingrid embraces her Vampiric side, desiring to be Vampire queen. Despite this, the Count belittles her, prefering to spend time training Vlad. This causes Ingrid to become both angry and bitter towards her father and brother, resulting in several murder attempts.
- Cain and Abel: Leaves Vlad for dead at the end of Series 2
- Also tries to stake Vlad in Bad Vlad, and forms a group of female vampires to kill Vlad in Hit Chicks.
- Can't Get in Trouble For Nuthin'
- Electra Complex: Leaves the Count in a UV cage at the end of Series 2.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Ingrid is excited to become evil incarnate by joining with her blood mirror self, but draws the line when it suggests she kill her boyfriend Will and decides to run off.
- Femme Fatale: Ingrid in series 3. In her own words: "twice as beautiful, three times as evil."
- Green-Eyed Monster: A lot of her hostility towards her family clearly comes from not only being The Unfavorite all her life, but the universe seemingly agreeing by making her brother The Chosen One despite his complete disinterest in it.
- Fille Fatale: Ingrid. And she's well aware of it.
- I Hate You, Vampire Dad: Ingrid suffers this, though it is mostly because the Count largely ignores her.
- Uncanny Valley Girl: Ingrid. No one notices, of course. Except Eric Van Helsing.
- The Unfavorite
- Vampires Are Sex Gods: All the boys at Stokely Grammar School are infatuated with her.
Ivan Dracula
Actor: Philip Brodie
- Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Played straight then subverted when he decides to become not-so-friendly.
- Heel Face Turn: Went from bloodthirsty vampire to soy-sustaining artifically tanned vamp. He's the former again.
Boris Dracula
Actor: Ciaran Joyce
Olga Dracula
Actress: Maddie Rakic-Platt
- Annoying Younger Sibling: And cousin
Other Vampires
Magda Carmilla Elizabeta Bathoria Westenra
Actress: Donna Grant
"Hello, Darlings!"
Magda is the ex-wife of Count Dracula (though she claims the two never married), and the mother of Vlad and Ingrid. Before the series started she ran off with a werewolf named Patrick, with whom, in Series 3, it is revealed she had a son, Wolfie. Magda returns back to her vampire family occasionally, solely to manipulate them into giving her something she wants.
- Abusive Parents: Has been leaving the family since Vlad and Ingrid were both really young. Shows up only to utterly manipulate them all. Arguably gets on better with Ingrid, but that doesn't really mean much.
- The Caligula: Sort of in her series 3 appearance.
- Femme Fatale: Uses this to manipulate The Count as she pleases.
- I Hate You Vampire Children: She really seems to resent having to play Mother.
- Missing Mom: Shows up twice a season. Implied in the first series to only be keeping in contact with Ingrid.
- Parent Service: Actress Donna Grant is gorgeous and Magda can be described as being 'for the Dads'.
- Vampires Are Sex Gods: Magda really plays to this more so than any other adult vampire the show has.
- Hot Mom
Crone and Atilla Westenra
Actors: Howell Evans (Crone), Rosamund Shelly (Atilla)
Bertrand du Fortunesa
Actor: Cesare Taurasi
- Magnificent Bastard: One of the more notable examples.
- Mentors: Fits a few of the archetypes.
Ryan Noble
Actor: Tom Gibbons
- Ungrateful Bastard: Shows elements of this towards Erin, though it is justified.
Major Humans
Renfield
Actor: Simon Ludders
- Abusive Parents: Not Renfield himself, but his father is a great example of this. He's more slightly veering towards failing sadistic babysitter when it comes to his interactions with the young Dracula's.
- Ambiguously Bi: Generally is attractive to otherwise unconventionally attractive females. However, often shows himself to be possibly attracted to the Count, getting jealous when he spends time with other people who aren't him. That being said, it's Renfield, so best not to think too hard about it.
- Butt Monkey: Prime example
- Disguised in Drag: Renfield in a dress Mentioned in series 3 as being a plan that "never fails"
Robin Branagh
Actor: Craig Roberts
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Due to his semi-gothic persona and obsession with vampires, Robin is something of an annoyance to his elder siblings Ian and Paul (and vice versa)
- Changeling Fantasy: In one episode, at least.
- I Just Want to Be Special
- Your Vampires Suck: Despite the fact that they are best friends, this is often Robin's reaction to Vlad's powerless state.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: He gets mindwiped, along with every other human present, in Season 2's finale.
Chole Branagh
Actress: Lucy Borja-Edwards
- Deadpan Snarker
- Only Sane Man
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: Mindwiped in S2 ep. 13
Eric Van Helsing
Actor: Terence Maynard
"Sure as boyscouts sing 'round camp fires, this whole school is full of vampires. Drinking blood, causing pain, and I won't rest 'til they are slain."
Eric Van Helsing is an ineffectual, yet extreemly dedicated, slayer. Van Helsing's cover identity is as a woodwork teacher at Stokely Grammar, where he initially believes Robin to be a vampire, but soon decides to focus on Vlad. This results in many failed attempts to slay the Draculas. It is revealed that his obsession caused his marrage with Mina to break up before the series started. Van Helsing desperately wants his son, Jonno, to follow in his path as a slayer, despite Jonno's initial resistance to the idea. Van Helsing is mind-wiped at the end of Series 2, and in Series 3, it's revealed that he was killed by vampires.
- Bumbling Dad: What Jonno sees him as in Series 1.
- Bus Crash: And it was Vlad's fault.
- The Hunter
- Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: He never slays a vampire and his plans irritate the Draculas more than anything else. He does eventually slay a vampire, but then forgets about it due to Vlad's mind-wipe.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: Vlad makes him forget about vampires at the end of Series 2.
- Vampire Hunter
Jonno Van Helsing
