The first series contains examples of:

• Hollywood Homely: Sally/Skids was considered "ugly" by the morlocks.
• Ho Yay: Julio/Rictor with Shatterstar; has since been made canon.
• Misblamed: There was no Pandering to the Base to bring Jean back. Nor was it Executive Meddling. It was simply that they finally figured out a way she could return without having killed five billion people.
  • In fact it was executive meddling that kept her from returning until they found a way (Madelyne Pryor was even supposed to be Jean reincarnated until that was nixed).
• Moral Event Horizon: Cameron Hodge had already been revealed to be a nasty piece of work, but then he made a deal with a master demon - immortality in exchange for supplying said demon with mutant babies.
• The Woobie:
  • Rusty/Firefist.
  • Leech. Seriously, this kid needs a lot of hugs after what he's been put through in his short life.

The second series contains examples of:

• Draco in Leather Pants: Pietro/Quicksilver in the X-Men Evolution cartoon.
• Moral Event Horizon: Pietro/Quicksilver kidnapping his own daughter Luna to subject her to mutating mists was just the beginning. Crystal was definitely not amused when she found out.
• My Real Daddy: Peter David is the man behind both the second and third series, and the title's name is now always linked to him.
• Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Madrox, who annoyed writers and artists alike for starting life as a visually boring and bland character whose superpower was to create visually boring copies of himself. It took Peter David's addition of creatively using his powers, a sense of humor and a philosophical side for the character to take off, and even after that, most writers still don't know what to do with him.

The third series contains examples of:

• Nightmare Fuel: Jamie Madrox absorbing his own son.
  • Also the mutant internment camps of the future.
  • The birth of Rahne's son. Just..... Rahne's son.
• Die for Our Ship: Some fans of Rictor/Shatterstar REALLY hate Rahne, especially after she tells Rictor he's the father of her baby.
• Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Layla again. She was previously regarded as nothing but a human Deus Ex Machina for House of M, but X-Factor has turned her into a genuine, interesting character.
  • Shatterstar as well.
• Ron the Death Eater: Rahne seems to be the most common target of this. She's either a kind-hearted woman with some very serious emotional issues, or an evil manipulative she-bitch out to ruin everything.
