Vlog Series
A trend in Web Original series. The series is presented as a video Blog (vlog) by a fictional character existing within the series, or as the vlogs of several characters. A subtrope of Character Blog.
The Vlog Series comes in two flavours: the more-or-less realistic variety, which is filmed using webcams and presented as entirely in-universe, as though it is really happening; and the traditional camera variety, which alternates between webcams and more conventional TV camera styles.
Examples of Vlog Series include:
In-Universe Camera
Comics
- Marvel Comics did one of these (in which a teenage girl suspected that her brother had been replaced by an alien) as a viral publicity for their Crisis Crossover Secret Invasion.
Live Action Television
- Irish tv series Dan and Becs and its sequel series Sarah and Steve were both shot in the form of first person diaries, cutting between their different tellings of the same events. It's never quite made clear whether or not they post the diaries on-line.
Web Video
- Lonelygirl15, which popularised this style.
- Kate Modern
- LG15: the resistance, purportedly, although it makes frequent use of what appears to be traditional camera footage.
- The Church of Blow.
- With the Angels.
- Redearth88.
- Fred.
- Internet Killed Television
- Much of The Lost Experience was presented this way.
- Maddison Atkins
- zeFrank did the show for a year, predating Lonelygirl15 by about 3 months.
- I'm a Marvel And I'm a DC has the sub-series "Goblin Blogging", which is presented as the Green Goblin's video blog.
- Marble Hornets, sort of. The idea of the series is that J is uploading footage from a bunch of tapes a friend gave him before disappearing, though eventually he starts shooting his own footage. Unlike other Vlog Series, he never actually talks to the camera - almost all exposition is done through white text on black background before and after the video.
- For that matter, Tribe Twelve and Everyman HYBRID.
- Transmissions from the Vacuum Consortium (usually).
- The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, a modernized Pride and Prejudice.
Traditional Camera
Web Video
- The Asexuality Chronicles
- Four Blokes Without Telly
- The Guild
- Furry Ackermonster's Vlogs on Transylvania Television's website.
- Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, arguably.
- Sofia's Diary.
- The Secret World of Sam King.
- N 1 ckola
- LG15: The Last
- Laci Green
- DownStairsGuys, which started out as more In-Universe, but drifted to Traditional Camera, almost to the point of seeming unrealistic in a few situations. Produced by Iron Sink Media.
- UpStairsGirls (See description for DownStairsGuys).
- The Gay Comic Geek's, alternate YouTube channel, Gay Geeky Vlogs, where Paul Staffelbach answers questions from fans and discusses things unrelated to comics. The vlog series of his various Con trips are usually found here, as well.
- Tree Fog
- Demyx Time
- Tobuscus' Lazy Vlog series, which although not fictional, frequently addresses the audience as a character as well as a (presumably) fictitious assistant.
- The Otaku Ascended: Can be found here. They are a pair of nerds who watch anime and My Little Pony adaptations. Better Than It Sounds.
