Unnecessary Makeover/Playing With

Basic Trope: A character looks better to the audience before a makeover than after.

  • Straight: Audrey gets a makeover. Everyone in-universe think she's hot...but the audience doesn't.
  • Exaggerated: Audrey looks Hollywood Homely. After the makeover, she looks like a creepy China doll.
  • Justified: This is a deconstruction or parody of She Cleans Up Nicely or Beautiful All Along.
  • Inverted: Something happens that makes Audrey supposedly uglier...but she looks better ugly than normal.
  • Subverted: Someone thinks she was better before in-universe, freeing her to go back to her old style.
  • Double Subversion: She likes the new style, even though some think she looked better before, and stays in it.
  • Parodied: Audrey starts off looking like a geek, but then gets attacked by a gang of cheerleaders and taken to the Alpha Bitch's house. She comes out looking like a Barbie doll.
  • Deconstructed: Audrey truly thinks that she needs a makeover due to very low self esteem and perhaps past experiences. But although everyone likes her new look, she doesn't like being liked just for looking attractive.
  • Reconstructed: But her friends tell her they like her regardless of her looks. And so does Brian...
  • Zigzagged: ??
  • Averted: The makeover really does make her look better...or she doesn't get one at all.
  • Enforced: "She looks better after because we say so! Never mind that child yelling that the Emperor's naked!"
  • Lampshaded: "Now, normally I'd advocate being yourself, but no one here is themselves, so..."
  • Invoked: Audrey doesn't think she's beautiful and voluntarily gets a makeover. She thinks she looks better afterwards...
  • Defied: Same as invoked, but she thinks she looks hideous afterwards.
  • Conversed: "Don't you just hate it when they makeover a pretty girl unnecessarily, and she comes out worse than before?"
