Tropes used in The Truth About Cats and Dogs include:
- Cleopatra Nose: Ironically, Uma Thurman has a noticeably bigger nose then Janeane Garofalo's, thus reversing that aspect of the original book.
- The Grovel: Ends with the woman grovelling to her male Love Interest, oddly enough.
- Hand or Object Underwear: Uma Thurman and a stack of loudspeakers.
- Hollywood Homely: Played with: Janeane Garofalo is beautiful by any normal standards. However, she considers herself far from attractive, especially when compared to Uma Thurman. It's never stated if she is considered ugly In-Universe and Uma Thurman has a serious case of self esteem issues where she considers herself ugly.
- Quoth Roger Ebert: "The movie is based upon the presumption that Garofalo is not pretty, and of course she is."
- Love Triangle
- Playing Cyrano
- Romantic Comedy
