• Tear Jerker: Katalina's death. Not just that she died, but the way it happened and Cole finding her body afterward.
• It's Not Porn, It's Art: Despite the copious amounts of word porn later on, the series contains a number of references to historical works of literature. Whether or not this elevates the series or simply makes it feel pretentious is still up for debate.
• Complete Monster: Foleman, one of the villains. His excuses make him all the worse.
  • Whittaker is something of a subversion of this. Though he commits numerous horrific acts, the story still makes him out to be much more sympathetic.
• Jerkass Woobie: Corhagen is slowly devolving into this.
• Nausea Fuel: The descriptions of the burned bodies, as well as them screaming after Cole resurrects them for questioning.
