• Billing Displacement: Despite being billed third, Gladys George only has three scenes in the movie, under Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet, who are central characters and have much more dialogue.
• The Danza: Wilmer Cook is played by Elisha Cook, Jr.
• Dawson Casting: Cook was actually thirty-seven during the time of filming, but Spade suggests his age to be around twenty when he reports Wilmer to the police.
• Beam Me Up, Scotty: Done by Spade himself. The actual quote is, "Such stuff as dreams are made on."

• Hey, It's That Guy!: Brigid O'Shaughnessy is Raymond Massey's mistress and Judy Garland's mother; Wilmer is Captain Kirk's lawyer, and Icepick from Magnum.
• Real Life Relative: Jacobi is played by John Huston's father, Walter Huston, as a good luck charm for his son's directorial debut. Notably, Huston later co-starred alongside Bogart in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, which was also directed by his son John.
• Star-Making Role: Humphrey Bogart's role as Samuel Spade puts him on the map as a plausible leading man.
