The L.A. Complex
Series about young performers trying to make it big in Hollywood, all living in a converted motel called the Deluxe Suites (or "Luxe for short), produced by Epitome Pictures (the people behind Degrassi and Instant Star).
Tropes used in The L.A. Complex include:
- Actor Allusion: Raquel's show that everyone knows her from ended before its time because of a lousy timeslot, similar to another show.
- The Alleged Car: Abby's mid-90s Honda Civic. Partly her fault; it has a huge pile of unpaid parking tickets and still sports Ontario plates six months after she arrived in L.A. so no surprise it gets booted.
- Black Best Friend: Discussed by Raquel, who thinks it's unrealistic.
- California Doubling: Inverted. Mostly shot in Toronto.
- Expy: Abby's basically Manny Santos, down to the same actor and her boyfriend back in Toronto being a mechanic.
- Hey, It's That Place!: Isn't there a "Wilhelm" store across the street from The Dot?
- The community center where Raquel's AA meets looks nothing at all like Degrassi...
- I Just Want to Be Special: All the major characters want to be actors or other performers.
- Only So Many Canadian Actors: Present but not as overbearingly so as you'd expect in an Epitome production.
- Screwed by the Network: CW's "let's wait a few months after the Canadian airdates to show it in the US" attitude led to massively lower ratings than in Canada. Season 2 will be broadcast at the same time.
- Stylistic Suck: Nick's standup routine.
- What Could Have Been: Abby originally was Manny Santos, in what was originally planned as a straight Spin-Off of Degrassi.
- White Dwarf Starlet: Raquel
-We had a lousy timeslot.
- Working Title: Highland Gardens.
