Kevin Laine

• The Ace: At least for much of the first book until the second...
  • Broken Ace: He learns that he can't fight and begins to doubt himself.
• Ethical Slut
• The Heart: Actually seems to keep the group together before the adventure starts in "The Summer Tree."
• Heroic Sacrifice: Returns to Gwen Ystrat and sacrifices himself to Dana to stop the snow.
• Living Emotional Crutch: Tries really hard to be this to Paul in the first book.
• The Load
• Really Gets Around:

Kimberly Ford

• Artifact Of Power: She becomes the custodian of several.
• Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Forms this with Dave in the end.
• My God, What Have I Done?: Shows regret for a numerous things she's done to help Fionavar.
• Seers
• Shorter Means Smarter: Often described as 'slight.'
• The Smart Guy:
• White-Haired Pretty Girl: After she becomes the new Seer

Paul Schafer/Pwyll Twiceborn

• Anti-Hero: Type II.
• Arch Enemy: Galadan
• Back from the Dead: He dies and is reborn as "Pwyll Twiceborn"
• Belligerent Sexual Tension
• Big Brother Mentor: Tries to fill this role for Darien, doesn't go so well.
• Deadpan Snarker: Very very deadpan. And usually only with people he feels very comfortable with. Interestingly, he seems to internalize alot of his snarking, as can be seen from the flashback sequence in his last night on the summer tree.
• Death Seeker
• The Determinator
• Evil Counterpart: Galadan is his.
• Face Death with Dignity
• Heroic Sacrifice: He hangs himself on the summer tree
• Heroic Willpower
• Kuudere: Of course, pretty much all the people who have seen his dere side are dead by the end of book two...
• Last-Minute Hookup: He almost leaves without admitting he loves Jaelle
• Opposites Attract: Paul is the living incarnation of the All-Father, and Jaelle the head priestess of the Mother-Goddess, so yeah.
• Nerves of Steel
• Pride: A primary character trait, unusual in that it's portrayed as a strength rather than a flaw.
• Rule of Symbolism: Paul is pretty obviously supposed to be an analogue to Odin.
• Smart People Play Chess
• The Stoic: So much that people find him unsettling and withdrawn.
  • Stoic Woobie
• Troubled but Cute
• When He Smiles: Subverted, when he smiles its usually described as crooked or mocking and is often in reaction to something tragically ironic happening.

Jennifer Lowe

• The Chick
• Earn Your Happy Ending: Kay puts her through hell and back.
• Everything's Better with Princesses: She's
• The Load: Though she has an understandable reason for being this way.
• Rape as Drama: She is captured by Rakoth Maugrim, who rapes her simply because he wants to break her.

Dave Martyniuk

• Abusive Parents: His dad was pretty tough on him.
• All Love Is Unrequited: Had a thing for Liane but it didn't go far.
  • He did get to bang a goddess as his consolation prize however...
• An Axe to Grind

• Badass Normal
• Bash Brothers: With Torc and Levon.
• The Berserker: Easy to bring him out of it though.
• Big Brother Mentor: To Tabor but briefly.

• Cool Old Guy: It's mentioned that even without Matt he can still sword fight quite well.
• Grandpa What Massive Hotness You Have: How some picture him and it'd help for once scene.
• May-December Romance: During the holiday in Ysarat he and Kim have sex. True she was an adult but he's at least 50, YMMV on if it's squicky.

• Belligerent Sexual Tension: it's subtle, but it's there with Paul.

• Odd Couple: Gradually warms up to Kim, even awkwardly embracing her when they re-met in the third book at Ysanne's cabin.
• Opposites Attract: She and Paul are both the physical representations of the Mother-Goddess and All-Father Archetypes, so of course they are going to do this.
  • Also the whole Kuudere / Tsundere thing.
• Slap Slap Kiss: Though it takes a while before the first kiss.
