The Fanfic Critic
Hello, I’m the FanFic Critic. I read it, you listen.
Megan Wessels is The FanFic Critic, who is a reviewer on YouTube who reviews fanfics, bad or good, with currently over 1,000 subscribers. She is known for being honest and harsh about the stories she reviews, and is often Driven to Suicide when the story is particularly awful.
Her YouTube channel is here. She also is one of the hosts and creators for The Net Dwellers. Did we also mention that she contributes to Reviewers Unknown and Manic Expression?
Not to be confused with The Fan Fiction Critic.

The Fanfic Critic provides examples of the following tropes:
- Acting for Two: The two recurring characters, the FanFic Critic and her cousin Susan, are both played by the same person.
- Berserk Button: Bad grammar and spelling, characters that are Out of Character, real-person fics, the list goes on.
- Anything dealing with small children in sexual situations or horrific deaths. This story is a good example.
- Breather Episode: Almost any episode that features a good fanfic.
- Catch Phrase: The page quote.
- Corpsing: While rare, it does happen from time to time.
- Deadpan Snarker: Susan
- Driven to Madness: Episode 08 finally drove The FanFic Critic insane.
- Driven to Suicide: First in Episode 03 where she reviewed a fanfic slashing the Nostalgia Critic and the AGVN and again 100 episodes later where she reviewed the sequel to said slashfic. She has attempted other suicides but her cousin is always there to stop her.
- Drowning Her Sorrows: Susan in episode 180
- Funny Background Event: In older episodes, sometimes Megan's sister would walk in and suddenly leave, or you can hear her mother telling her to keep it down. Justified, as she still lived with her parents at the time.
- Still happens from time to time, especially if she has someone else in the room.
- Gilligan Cut: In Episode 129, this effect forces the FanFic Critic into reviewing the infamous Cupcakes.
- Go Mad from the Revelation: As insane as she is, The FanFic Critic has had this happen a few times. One example is reading a bad, albeit well-written, story from an author she had encountered before. As her mind cracks, she sings a parody of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".
- Hostile Show Takeover: Susan takes over the show in Episode 161.
- I Need a Freaking Drink: Has been becoming more prominent the worse the story is, especially if the fanfic involves homicidal ponies.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: Susan, after being killed and then brought back to life by the FanFic Critic, went nuts. The FanFic Critic, feeling guilty for her role in Susan's insanity, made sure her memories of the incident were erased. Susan got them back eventually in a much later season.
- No Kill Like Overkill: In Episode 81, the FanFic Critic rips up printed papers of a bad Land Before Time fanfiction, proceeds to slice it up with her straight razor, and then eats it.
- Old Shame: The first season (episodes 01-20), which is lampshaded by both the FanFic Critic and Susan.
- In one episode from season 3, she does a long summary review on a Sweeney Todd story that she wrote.
- Only Sane Woman: Susan, though she is slowly becoming like her cousin (see Episodes 140 onwards).
- Real Song Theme Tune: Her opening theme is the opening theme of Sweeney Todd
- Reason You Suck Speech: She has her rants, most notably if the fanfic has atrocious grammar, and godawful content.
- Running Gag: Susan preventing The FanFic Critic from killing herself.
- The FanFic Critic trying to find a third thing to say at the end of her videos.
- Talking To Herself: Currently, Megan plays three characters: the titular character, Susan, and Lesbian Jesus(who was created by another fanfic reviewer on YouTube named Aliento). She did play another character called "the Crappy Arthor" back in her first few seasons but that character was written off.
- Throw It In: The entirety of Episode 106 was done impromptu and in one take, because it angered her so much. In fact, most of her show is impromptu with the exception of a few episodes.
- Tomboyish Ponytail
- Prim and Proper Bun in the more recent episodes
- We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties: Done twice in her review of Sweet Apple Massacre.
- Wingding Eyes: The smilie-face eyes. It's scary.
