• Alas, Poor Villain: Although Casey finishes off Marybeth, aka the alien queen, with a Pre-Mortem One-Liner, it's quickly followed by a subdued "You wouldn't have liked it here anyway."
• Evil Is Sexy:
  • The nerdy teacher Miss Burke gets a lot sexier after she falls under the aliens' control.
  • Mrs. Olson also ditches her glasses, lets her hair down and dresses more sharply after getting infected.
• Family-Unfriendly Aesop: Drugs Are Bad Good, since they can kill aliens and help you find the enemy in your midst!
• Harsher in Hindsight: One scene in this film involves a character shooting his high school principal in the face. This film was released four months before Columbine.
• Hollywood Homely / Hollywood Nerd: Famke Janssen as Miss Burke, before she gets infected.
• Memetic Mutation: It's now become common practice to show Jon Stewart's death scene in this movie for stock footage relating to him. Sometimes it's unrelated to what's being talked about.
• X Meets Y:
  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets The Breakfast Club meets Scream, as directed by Robert Rodriguez.
