The Art of Subconscious Illusion
The Art of Subconscious Illusion: Rewritten is a Death Note and House Fan Fiction Crossover by Troper Ruin Takada.
Tropes used in The Art of Subconscious Illusion include:
- Actor Allusion: Luke's surname, Laurie.
House: Great Fry's Ghost!
- A Boy And His Shinigami
- A God Am I
- All Girls Want Bad Boys
- Alone with the Psycho: Cameron usually ends up a victim of this.
- Alternative Character Interpretation: The whole premise. Evil guy with killing notebook? Manic depressive with a mental disorder, actually.
- Artistic License: 'Phantasy Science'
- The Atoner
- Backstory: Light gets one in chapter 10.
- Beneath the Mask: Something of a common theme in this one. Confirmed with a Shout-Out to The Mask in chapter 11.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Wilson.
- Big Bad
- Brick Joke: A few examples. For eample number 1, House explains in chapter 10 that Dora couldn't have been snooping around, because the last time she did, it was to set up the event for chapter 6 two weeks in advance.
- Brutal Honesty: House, almost on principal
- Bullying the Dragon: Cameron and Dr Morning towards Light. Really.
- Bungled Suicide
- Butt Monkey: Dora the receptionist. So many bad things happen because of her incompetence, and so many people are blighted because of her, so much so that people are openly cursing her name. Funny thing, her full name, Theodora Theofilopoulos, contain two uses of the Greek word for ‘God’. Also, of all the main doctors in the team, Chase is the only one to not get a section in his POV.
- Canon Immigrant: Kinddara ‘Kindd’ Morning, the eldest daughter of Dr Morning and narrator of Ruin Takada’s previous work, Fame Less Than Infamy. She is openly referenced as ‘a journalist in Chicago’ in chapter 9. When an American journalist is needed at all, we call on her. Also Toors Denote, who was only mentioned once in the manga.
- Chekov'sGunman: Luke Laurie and Linda Tailor.
- The Chosen One
- Continuity Nod: In the original version (this one IS the rewrite), the vegetative state guy was Joseph Denote, the relative of a minor character mentioned one in the manga. As of chapter 10 of this rewrite, he is the original Toors Denote.
- Contrived Coincidence: Had Light never got a manic episode and tried killing the Invigilator, he would’ve come clean about the self-harm and depression, and thus he wouldn’t have gotten so crazy. A little bit Fridge Horror, all considered.
- Covered with Scars
- Crapsack World: But only if you believe it.
- Crazy Laugh: In chapter 3.
- Crossover: Death Note and Series/House, which seems to work. Also, The Art of Subconscious Illusion: Rewritten and Fame Less Than Infamy, with Kinddara’s (from FLTI) father making his debut in this one. Kinddara is mentioned as well.
- Dark and Troubled Past
- Darker and Edgier
- Deadpan Snarker: House for the most part, although others have their moments.
- Deal with the Devil: Part of the whole premise, thanks to Camerons and without anyone else's input.
- Deus Ex Machina: Or is that Latans Ex Machina? Luke, with the milk.
- Driven to Suicide
- Dr. Jerk: Mainly House, but Foreman as well.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones
- Even Evil Has Standards
- Fantastic Racism: House on the Australian Dr Chase, mate!
- Five-Man Band:
- The Lancer: Ryuzaki
- The Chick: Cameron. She is all heart.
- The Hero: House (YMMV).
- The Smart Guy: Chase, apparently.
- The Big Guy: Foreman
- The Sixth Ranger: Dr Morning, as the Johnny-Come-Lately.
- For Want of a Nail: The whole premise, again.
- Freudian Excuse
- Fridge Brilliance
- Friend to All Children: Light, amazingly enough.
- Gorn: Chapter 11. Funny, when you think that it was inspired by a song ('Scream', by Avenged Sevenfold) which will Remind You Of Something.
- Gratuitous Japanese: As this is set in America, any Japanese spoken is written in Romaji, with traslations provided later.
- Hallucination: Ryuk, in this one.
- Hearing Voices: Insanity Berry flavour.
- Incredibly Lame Pun
- Informed Ability
- Interrupted Suicide
- I'veComeTooFar
- Jerkass Woobie: Light (YMMV)
- Knife Nut
- Last-Name Basis: ALL the doctors get this, so you know stuff's going down when a first name is used.
Cameron: But this kid is a Genius!
Chase: So? What has that got- Cameron: Oh please, Robert!
- Lawful Evil: Light promises to kill the intended target only if they have failed after seven days. Subverted in that he has been known to break this little rule. His game has some pretty bad rules.
- Manipulative Bastard
- Meaningful Name: Doctor Beyondormason Morning is named after a shinigami, as is Kinddara, his daughter. Luke, the purple-haired boy, is a (coincidentally) walking avatar of Ryuk the hallucination, and his name comes from Ryuk.
- Mind Screwdriver: Chapter 10.
- National Stereotypes: Light is Japanese, therefore he has never eaten Shepherd’s pie before (a dish made from minced lamb or mutton and mashed potatoes). Also, all those Aussie jokes from House.
House: (On Foreman) Heh. Thirty years on, and he's still robbing old men blind.
- Neat Freak: Light is, allegedly, along with mother Sachiko.
- Not So Different: Light and House seem to embody this, despite being the main opposition.
- Not What It Looks Like: Inverted a little in chapter 6. Light indulges in House’s habit of having lunch with Vegetative State guy, and Cameron helps him off the bed, only for it to fail and Light ends up holding her by the neck to keep from falling, with her bent over him. Wilson comes in, to see what he believes to be… Light strangling Cameron. No, it wasn’t what you think, but wouldn't it be nice if it was?
- Original Character: Dr Beyondormason Morning, Kinddara Morning, Luke Laurie, Theodora 'Dora' Theofilopoulos, and Linda Tailor.
- Psychological Horror
- Red Eyes, Take Warning
- Retcon
- Rewrite: This fic is a rewrite of the original, which was abandonned due to allegedly bad writing and a bad plot that no one was happy with.
- Running Gag: The whole deal with the wipe-board markers. Also doubles as something of a Berserk Button. Dora is also this.
- Scars Are Forever
- Self-Harm
- Share Phrase: ‘His/Her words, not mine’. Used first by Cameron, then by Chase, and then, without any prompt or sign of it being used near him, Light. Could be because he heard it from his supernatural telepathy, or simply because strange minds think alike (very unlikely, since House is yet to use it).
- Shout-Out: So many, there will have to be a separate page.
- Shown Their Work: All the info on mental illness and drugs was researched extensively on The Other Wiki, and if there are any inaccuracies/inversions, it’s because Ruin Takada is a writer, not a psychologist, and likes to change things in the name of artistic license every now and again and call it 'Phantasy Science'.
- Take That: The first chapter with the seizure can be seen as a take that to the Series/House series itself, as patients tend to get these at the beginning of the episode, only for there to be no mention of the seizure again. The early chapters are quite like that.
- Techno Babble: All the usage of medical terms, regardless of whether or not the reader understands them. Subverted in that they are more or less accurate.
- Terror Hero – House, as a type 2. Light, as a major type 4, and minor type 3 (YMMV on the Hero part). Not So Different, are they?
- There Are No Therapists: And if there had been, it would've been a different story, as lampshaded by Dr Morning in chapter 9.
- This Is Unforgivable!
- Time Skip: The first chapter is in Mid-April 2006, while the second is in early September 2006.
- Titled After the Song: Chapter 11 ('Scream').
- Token Good Teammate: Cameron. Even she is aware of this.
- Took a Level in Badass: Light.
- Unreliable Narrator: Especially in chapter 10.
