Teen Pregnancy/Playing With

  • Basic Trope: A teenage girl becomes pregnant.
  • Played Straight: Alice, age 16, finds she is pregnant not long after she lost her virginity to her boyfriend, Bob.
  • Exaggerated: Alice had sex for the first time, at age 12, and got pregnant before she even had her first period.
  • Justified: Teenagers can become pregnant, and may not necessarily be educated about birth control and its proper use, especially in places with abstinence-only sex education, or with none to speak of.
    • Alternatively, the story is set during a time period where there was no period of adolescence; a girl was considered a marriageable adult as soon as she had her first period and married off.
    • The story is set where the life expectancy is very poor or after Depopulation Bomb event. As a result, teen pregnancy was needed to ensure the survival of the human race.
    • The story in set in a police-state and enslaved those upon teenage years. However, the government will excuse those who are pregnancy. Finding this out, Alice, who's still a teenager, and gets pregnant thanks to this.
  • Inverted: Alice becomes pregnant, but she is well past childbearing age.
    • Or, she may be of childbearing age, but she is an adult with the means to support the child, and a long-term partner to help her.
  • Subverted: Alice thinks she's pregnant, but it turns out to be a false alarm.
    • Alternatively, Alice becomes pregnant, but she is a 19-year-old college student, not a High School or Junior High student.
  • Double Subverted: But then she actually does become pregnant.
    • But later it turns out that she lied about her age and she is 16 actually.
      • Or even without lying about her age, she still has to deal with the possibility of putting her education on hold, etc.
  • Deconstructed: This is going to cause a lot of problems for Alice. She is not educated enough to qualify for a job that will allow her to support herself and the baby, and all her dreams for the future will have to be put on hold. And Bob may not stay with her. Or, if she decides not to keep the baby, she'll probably suffer some Angst, and might endure scorn from others. On the subject of "scorn from others," she'll have to endure people whispering as she starts to show, because of My Girl Is Not a Slut. And let's not even mention Morning Sickness and other "joys" of pregnancy, and how that might affect her at school, or what her parents might do.
  • Reconstructed: Alice has people who love and support her, no matter what. They make sure her pregnancy is a safe and healthy one, and help her either care for the baby, or find an adoption agency to give it to. If she decides to keep the baby, Alice manages to balance completing high school (or at least getting a GED), holding a job, and taking care of the baby. (And, of course, Bob marries her.)
  • Parodied: Every girl in Alice's class becomes pregnant.
  • Zig Zagged: Some teenage girls become pregnant, others get through adolescence without having children.
  • Lampshaded: "I can't have a baby! I'm only 16!"
  • Averted: No teenagers become pregnant.
  • Enforced: Very Special Episode, Can't Get Away with Nuthin', Scare'Em Straight, Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped
  • Invoked: Alice and Bob have sex, but they don't know how to use a condom correctly (or don't use one at all, thinking that they won't need one.)
  • Exploited: Alice tries The Baby Trap, in an attempt to get Bob to stay with her.
  • Defied: Alice and Bob either use a condom correctly, or don't have vaginal sex in the first place.
  • Discussed: "Poor Alice. What will she do?"
  • Conversed: "Yeah...it's tough to have a baby in high school..."
  • Played For Laughs: Alice has a lot of foibles during her pregnancy, but takes it all in stride.
  • Played For Drama: Almost always is.
