Super Robot Wars Gaiden
Super Robot Wars Gaiden is the first Original Generation game...EVER.
That said, it was released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1996, and for a SNES game, it featured the best 16-bit graphics ever, mecha drawn to scale (averting the Super-Deformed formula), and had a storyline that made Super Robot Wars 4 look like Fan Fiction. Suffice to say, this is the best Super Robot Wars on the SNES.
The story of Gaiden tells solely on the origins of the entire Masou Kishin cast, and the genesis of the long feud between Masaki Andoh and Shu Shirakawa. The plot is split into two parts: "Part 1" occurs prior to the events of Super Robot Wars 2, while "Part 2" takes place following the end of Super Robot Wars 4. Also, this was the first SRW that could have been released for localization, but it's rather racy, risque dialogue sadly made this a No Export for You. It's also the first SRW to incorporate voice acting.
An Updated Rerelease for the Nintendo DS was out in 2010, under the name Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Masou Kishin - The Lord of Elemental, linking the game up with the rest of the Original Generation series. In October 2011, a PlayStation Portable sequel entitled Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Masou Kishin II: Revelation of Evil God was announced, and released on January 12, 2012. To mark the 15th anniversary of the Masou Kishin series, a new Updated Rerelease of the original game will be bundled with Revelation of Evil God, complete with enhanced visuals and extended voice acting.
- Alternate Company Equivalent (After cutting their deal with Banpresto, developer WinkySoft released Seireiki Rayblade, which is very similar to this game and full of Captain Ersatzes)
- Bag of Spilling (Several units from Part 1 lose their upgrades after the timeskip to Part 2)
- Bottle Fairy (Rebecca "Becky" Turner. In fact, when she's drunk, which is often, she tends to strip topless)
- The Cameo ( Ryusei Date appears in the DS rerelease when Masaki recalls the events in Original Generation between Part 1 and 2, more specifically the part at the beginning of the first game where he confronts Shu for the first time at Antarctica)
- Combination Attack (Revelation Of Evil God finally gives some combination attack options, including Masaki-Lune, Yang Long-Tytti, Mio-Precia)
- Copy Protection (The DS rerelease has A LOT of intentional bugs should you play a pirated copy: first, you may not be able to get the game to run at all. Get past that, then Mooks start One Hit Killing you; get past that, then Shu will always One-Hit Kill you when he's required to just lower your HP to critical; get past that...well, the game may finally run normally...except the music and everything is in SNES quality rather than what the DS offers)
- Downer Ending ( Part 1 ends with Langran completely wrecked, King Alzarl and one of the heralds dead (Ricardo) and the supposed "culprit" Shu leaving to the surface world to help Bian Zoldark with his impending revolution. Masaki leaves La Gias in pursuit of his nemesis)
- Five-Man Band
- The Hero: Masaki
- The Lancer: Yang Long
- The Big Guy: Ricardo; succeeded by Mio
- The Smart Guy: Xenia
- The Chick: Tytti
- The Sixth Ranger: Lune (sometimes doubles as Masaki's other Lancer)
- Foreshadowing (At the end of the game, Masaki gets lost again -- super lost. So bad that his friends aren't even sure where he is. Where did he finally turn up? Another Century's Episode: R)
- Gaiden Game (On the face of it, this is entirely true: Part 1 can effectively serve as canon to the Classic/Alpha/Original Generation timelines, and if Shu is Killed Off for Real and then came Back From the Dead, only to rebel against Shiva Volkruss in any of these continuities, it sets up Part 2)
- Gainaxing (Lune Zoldark, Princess Xenia and Simone Culian have it in the rerelease. In the sequel, Xenia gets this. In short, unless you're Tytti or Mio, you bounce)
- Hidden Depths (You'll get to see many of the Masou Kishin characters' depth, development and personalities, but Tytti's probably gets the most out of Gaiden, what with the lack of progress seen in EX)
- Lolicon (Jino Varensia; his manner towards Presia Zenosakis makes Masaki worry)
- Mad Scientist (Zet Laas Blakio)
- Original Generation (Not the Trope Namer, but definitely the Ur Example)
- Double Standard Rape (Female on Female): Played for laughs. At one point, probably due to shock on breast size difference, Mio proceeds to grope on Tytti's boobs much to her chargin. It's even got a picture for it.
- Retool (Ahmed Hamdi, one of the original pilots from Arab, is at first a devout Muslim whose Battle Cry is "ALLAHU AKBAR!!". In the rerelease, his Muslim reference is removed, making him just a normal Arab, probably to avoid Unfortunate Implications)
- In the rerelease, the names of Mio's familiars are changed into Son Goku, Cho Hakkai and Sha Gojyo, each looking like the three of them.
- Red Baron ("Heavenly Sword" Zeoroot Zan Zenosakis and "Sword Saint" Shumel Heul)
- Shout-Out (In the remake, eventually Tytti
declareslies that she's 17 years old...)
Saphine: "Oi oi..."
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute (Inversed example: Mio was created first as the eventual herald of Zamzeed in EX, but since Part 1 takes place way before EX (where Mio debuts), she's replaced by Ricardo Silvera in Gaiden, who obviously gets Killed Off for Real halfway through the game to make way for Mio in Part 2)
- Token Evil Teammate: Gaen in Revelations of Evil God. He still summons Volkruss minions on daily basis... to blast your enemies to smithereens, that is.
- Updated Rerelease (For the Nintendo DS. The majority of plot is kept, with only a few changes made to mesh it better with Original Generation)
- And there's going to be another rerelease for the PSP, which will be bundled with Revelation of Evil God in a special edition.
