SuperHeroHype RPGs

The Superhero!Hype RPGs board is a place where fans of various different companies come together to play RPGs by post in relative harmony. Players apply for characters and come up with their own plots, but are encouraged to interact with the other players on the board. Recently this has been followed through with a number of Apocalypse/World Domination/Registration Act arcs, to varying degrees of success.

Unlike boards such as DC Nation, the Basement (so identified because the RPGs are at the bottom of the boards...no other reason...) has a number of RPGs to play on from both DC and Marvel, as well as other continuites based upon the player's own universe. Each RPG is split into different seasons, which last more than a year in real time.

Tropes used in SuperHeroHype RPGs include:

World of Heroes

  • Action Girl: Often, but most notably in the cases of Black Canary and, in later seasons, Ravager.
  • A God Am I: Darkseid's ultimate goal in season 8, and eventually Superman.
  • Antagonist in Mourning: The Joker after stabbing Batman to death.
  • Anti-Hero: Sinestro.
  • Anyone Can Die: But they'll probably come back again.
  • Alternate Continuity: The RPG diverges around the time of Identity Crisis from the main DC canon, though there have been recent attempts to co-opt certain (Black Lantern related) aspects of the comics.
  • The Atoner: Sinestro is played as this for around 5 seasons, making up for misdeeds and even joining the Justice League. It makes his eventual Face Heel Turn hurt that much more.
  • Author Existence Failure: Players have been known to drop out midway through important arcs of which they were a key part, much to everyone's dismay.
  • Badass: He may be a Complete Monster, but Deathstroke is undeniably this.
  • Bald of Evil: Lex Luthor, obviously.
  • Big Bad: Occasionally one appears toward the end of the season. Braniac/Doomsday, Sinestro and Darkseid are significant examples.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: The Joker and Lex Luthor emerge at the head of the Dark Alliance in season 6.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: The Dark Alliance's method to deal with Superboy - use latent brainwashing to turn him evil, and get him to break his girlfriend's back.
  • Butt Monkey: The Teen Titans seem to be this. Their members are constantly targeted by the masterminds of various nefarious schemes.
  • The Chessmaster: Surprisingly, the Joker.
  • Complete Monster: Too many to count sometimes. The Joker, Deathstroke and Doctor Light especially stand out from the Dark Alliance arc.
  • Crack Pairing: Tim Drake/Rose Wilson
  • Deal with the Devil: How Zachary Zatara got his power upgrade in this continuity. Comes in useful at various times, including when Neron turns up to protect his investment from the Joker.
  • Death Is Cheap: How many characters have come back from the dead?
  • The Dragon: Black Hand to Darkseid in season 8.
  • Doomsday Device: The Apokalypton Sun-Killer
  • Face Heel Turn: Sinestro.
  • Freudian Excuse: How the Joker explains Luthor's hatred for Superman.
  • Heel Face Turn: Sinestro.
  • Holy Shit Quotient: Guy Gardner is the White Lantern?! Holy shit!
  • Intercontinuity Crossover: Superman goes on a voyage of discovery between the universes in order to stop General Zod.
  • Love Triangle: Tim/Zach/Rose
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Guy Gardner.
  • One-Winged Angel: Braniac/Doomsday
  • Pregnant Badass: Rose at the beginning of season 7.
  • Rape as Drama: The unenviable fate of Speedy at the hands of Doctor Light.
  • Running Gag: --> To Tim: Are you sure that baby's yours?
  • Saving the World: So many times.
  • Tear Jerker: Many. Including Tim's soliloque about the nature of non-powered heroes.
  • Wham! Episode: The Joker's going to try and destroy the sun! Batman's appeared to stop him! The Sun-Killer is crashing towards the Earth! Crime Alley is destroyed, everything's going to be okay! The Joker stabs Batman when he's stunned!
