Zerg Swarm
Abathur
Voiced By: Steve Blum
The Evolution Master of the Swarm, Abathur serves as the Zerg's logistical and technical support. He formerly served the Overmind and was responsible for turning Kerrigan into the Queen of Blades on the former's orders, went feral for awhile after the Overmind's death on Aiur, then returned to the Swarm soon after Kerrigan's assumption of control over them following the Brood War.
Tropes exhibited by this character include:
- Affably Evil: He's extremely callous and dismissive of any deaths he might cause with his experiments and tends to be aloof from most emotional concerns in general, yet he always remains respectful of Kerrigan and answers her questions without backtalk.
- Badass: Of the non-conventional sort. In a physical confrontation a lowly Terran Marine could likely kill him, but in a support role, he can enhance Zerg forces to Game Breaker extremes in Co-op play.
- Badass Labcoat: Without actually needing to wear one, since he is the Zerg equivalent, being their Evolution Master, and his immense knowledge of biology allows him to forge even the weakest Zerg into terrible weapons.
- Beige Prose: His speech is clipped and brusque, generally lacking articles or unnecessary words, not to mention is very to the point.
- Evilutionary Biologist: Even though Kerrigan is no longer the sociopathic "Queen Bitch of the Universe", Abathur serves as her Token Evil Teammate by Zerg standards, being utterly indifferent to the suffering of anyone, performs experiments even on Zerg while they are still alive, and only really cares about his experiments, any concept of morality, compassion, or restraint be damned.
- Expy: He has Mordin Solus' speech patterns and Mayuri's sociopathy and Token Evil Teammate status even to his own side.
- Lack of Empathy: To the point he's completely confused when given a compliment, because the ideas of showing mercy, admiration or compassion are that incomprehensible. He even tosses failed experiments back into the spawning pool while still alive, not even bothering with a Mercy Kill because he figures they'll die anyway. He even muses making a Zerg hypersensitive to pain would be a good idea simply for it's scientific value.
- Mad Scientist: Bizarrely, while he fits the trope in a casual sense, he's an extremely rational and thoughtful being, and his experiments are made with much thought and foresight, but he still fits the trope because his desire to do things simply for no other reason than For Science can reach some pretty huge extremes.
- Token Evil Teammate: Most of the other Zerg leaders are capable of some degree of loyalty, compassion, and honor. Abathur couldn't give a damn about any of those concepts and simply serves because he wants to continually improve upon the Zerg.
Zagara
Voiced by: Nika Futterman
Tropes exhibited by this character include:
- Bastard Understudy: She makes no secret she wants Kerrigan's job, but wisely acknowledges she has a lot to learn before she's capable of getting it, and with Kerrigan's approval she is willing to remain loyally subordinate in order to one day earn the title of Queen of the Swarm.
- The Dragon / The Lancer: She zigzags between the two, now serving a far less evil Kerrigan while still being rather amoral herself, but as time goes on she becomes, by Zerg standards, rather heroic and noble as Kerrigan's second in command and designated successor.
- Moral Myopia: Has a bit of one where she thinks Terrans are disadvantaged because they lack a Hive Mind and thus doomed to be alone, and genuinely believes infesting them does them a favor whether they want it or not, though she is also well aware that the Hive Mind can and has been used against the Zerg with terrible and bloody results.
- Number Two: Serves as Kerrigan's vice commander by default, and Kerrigan often has her take full control of the Zerg when Kerrigan has to perform some other task.
- Undying Loyalty: Bizarrely handled. After she is defeated she serves Kerrigan once more after having rebelled, but elects to remains loyal after realizing she's got a lot to learn if she wants to be as cunning and farsighted as Kerrigan, and while this initially manifests as a self-serving desire for eventual power Kerrigan nonetheless tolerates, Zagara shows that she genuinely respects her Queen, even being willing to ignore opportunities to backstab Kerrigan since Zagara realizes Kerrigan is still the better qualified leader. By Legacy of the Void, she has become so much more altruistic she even works willingly alongside Raynor and his forces, even urging Raynor to make sure he does not let Kerrigan fall in battle. And her loyalty is ultimately rewarded with Kerrigan handing over the Swarm to Zagara after becoming a Xel'Naga, making Zagara her heir as a reward for this trope.
