Soul Eater Not!

Soul Eater Not! is a spin-off manga from the same Mangaka who did Soul Eater and is set in the same universe. In fact it's something of a prequel to the main series, though focuses on different characters. It was picked up for an English release in 2011 by Yen Press.

14-year-old Tsugumi Harudori is a new student entering Death Weapon Meister Academy. She is a Weapon, but is unable to transform just yet. But, after encouragement from Maka, Tsugumi attempts to face her first year in DWMA with high hopes.

Tropes used in Soul Eater Not! include:
  • Academy of Adventure
  • All There in the Manual: This actually is the manual for Soul Eater as we learn far more about how life goes for regular students such as dorm rules, money management, why some kids wear uniforms and others don't, and several other things that help to flesh out the world of the original Soul Eater.
  • Ax Crazy: Misery, the dorm manager.
  • Bishounen: Akane and Clay.
  • Blade on a Stick: Tsugumi
  • Bland-Name Product: Maka leaves Tsugumi a can of what appears to be "Dr. Pepper" of all things on the top step.
  • Blond Brunette Light-Brunette: Anya, Tsugumi, and Meme.
  • The Cameo: Several of the main cast of Soul Eater show up this way, given that it's a Spin-Off/Prequel type thing of the series. For instance, Kilik can be seen on a poster here.
  • Big Bad: Shaula Gorgon
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Meme is shaping into one, changing her hair tie from where it formerly was and casually forgetting her name when greeting Tsugumi. Incredibly, she's a weapon user.
  • Cool Big Sis: Despite being the same age, Maka arguably seems to be some form of this for Tsugumi. Also, Eternal Feather-sempai.
  • Cool Sword: SUBVERTED TO HOLY HELL with their first opponent.
    • Played straight with Clay.
  • Crash Into Hello: Meme and Tsugumi's first meeting combines this with Funbag Airbag.
  • Creepy Cool Crosses: Anya's outfit features these.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Meme can fight people... in her sleep.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: Anya and Tsugumi versus the big guy and the guy who can't change his head only takes three panels.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Tsugumi and Meme.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Anya, who fled from a posh religious(?) school in order to meet "common people". Of course, it's beneath her to actually admit it.
  • The Ditz: Meme.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Anya in that waitress outfit.
    • Tsugumi at all times.
  • Expy: Misery of Annie Wilkes. Though she shares the same name as the movie. See Shout-Out below.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Misery, the dorm manager.
  • Fan Girl:
    • Tsugumi becomes a bit of one towards Maka after meeting her. She even styles her hair into Girlish Pigtails.
    • Anya is a fangirl for anything "commoner"-related, indicated from her excited reaction to a regular market versus her disappointed reaction to the wealthy-looking Shibusen girls' dorm.
    • Misery-san, head of the girls' dorm, is a fan of a certain book series and adores Tsugumi because she looks like the main character. When she discovers Tsugumi doesn't act like the character she decides to fix it with a hammer.
  • Fish Out of Water. Tsugumi. Also, Anya, who seems to come from a wealthy background and isn't used to "common people."
  • Fortune Teller: Kana Altair, who looks nothing like your typical fortune teller.
  • Freudian Trio: Id - Meme; Ego - Tsugumi; Superego - Anya.
  • Funbag Airbag: This is how Tsugumi first meets Meme.
  • Hair Decorations
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Akane has Star pupils. Since he trained with the Star Clan.
  • Hair of Gold: Anya.
  • Hime Cut: Anya.
  • Imagine Spot: Tsugumi claims she's surrounded by pretty boys at the academy, but she snaps out of her thoughts once she sees Blackā˜†Star punching a guy in the face.
  • In Love with Love: According to Tsugumi, anyway.
  • Irony: Sid hits Maka with a book: "Sid Chop" in chapter 4 and then she returns the favor latter in the original manga.
  • Jerkass Facade: Kim Dhiel, but we already knew that.
  • Lady of War: Anya, in all probability.
  • Lighter and Softer
  • Little Miss Snarker: Kana snarks with tarot cards.
  • Love Triangle: Tsugumi had a desired Imagine Spot of being in a sort of "threesome" with two boys vying for her as their weapon, but it didn't quite go as planned, as Meme and Anya want Tsugumi to be their partner.
  • Megane: Akane.
  • Meganekko: The female sempai, Thousand Feather introduced in Chapter 2.
  • Mood Dissonance: Anya tends to look pleased while saying seemingly insulting things and annoyed while saying seemingly approving things due to her inability to be honest about what she likes.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Akane.
  • Nice Hood: Kana has cat ears on them.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Anya wakes up one morning to find Meme in bed with Tsugumi, who is tied up with rope, all for totally non-sexual reasons. She of course assumes something kinky was going on.
  • Ojou: Anya.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: It's specified that many DWMA students may choose (or unwillingly receive) a nickname that's treated as their actual name. One particularly unlucky student had Kim rapidly get everyone to call her "Eternal Feather."
  • Peek-a-Bangs: Akane
  • Pettanko: Tsugumi, in comparison to Meme.
  • Prequel: Given Sid isn't a zombie yet and Medusa is still a nurse.
    • And Kim and Jacqueline haven't formed a team yet.
  • The Runaway: Anya
  • School Uniforms Are the New Black: The Academy has as many school uniforms - female students can even choose between sweaters and sailor-style - and casual clothes are fine too.
  • Sempai-Kohai: Maka, Eternal Feather and others are sempais to Tsugumi, Meme and Anya.
  • Serious Business: Misery and her favorite novel.
  • Shout-Out: Misery-san, looking like Annie Wilkes and is a huge fan of a novel, similar to how Annie was. She was obviously named for the book/movie and designed to look like Annie. Of course, it's not surprise that Ohkubo is a Stephen King fan.
  • Shrouded in Myth: "The Witch of the Dorm." Is it the psychotic housemistress Misery? The enigmatic and rude fortune teller Anya? It's actually the relatively normal Kim Diehl, who saves Tsugumi from Misery and then demands her week's allowance as payment. 'Course, this is before we learn she's an actual witch...
    • Also Harudori saw a Tanuki statue and it immediately reminded her of Kim, who Animal Motifs is said animal.
  • Spin-Off: Of Soul Eater.
  • Title Drop / Fun with Acronyms: 4 chapters in we find out "NOT" is the abbreviation for "Normally Overcome Target", the name of the class taken by the majority of the students who aren't actively fighting.
  • Tsundere: Anya appears to be a Type A towards Tsugumi.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Those waitress outfits.
