Somewhere
Sofia Coppola's fourth film builds on the themes of her last couple, particularly Lost in Translation. Once again, the protagonist is a celebrity suffering from ennui. Johnny Marco fins himself forced to spend time with his estranged daughter during an Italy tour, and though the two bond, this isn't enough to keep from experiencing an existential crisis.
Tropes used in Somewhere include:
- The Cameo:Several, including Benicio del Toro.
- Desperately Looking for a Purpose In Life: Johnny admits this in tears over the phone.
- Ignore the Sexy: In a subtler example than most, Johnny tries to feign interest in the strippers he hires, but he really doesn't seem to care that they're there.
- The Voice: Johnny's wife.
