• Holden Carver, the protagonist of Brubaker and Phillips' Sleeper is a superhuman "pain battery". He can absorb any injury without feeling it or sustaining lasting damage, and transmit the sensation (but not the physical injury) to others through contact. At first, it just seemed like a cool power, but later(during the Cairo bar fight scene to be precise)you realize that soaking up a lot of pain and beatings and then passing it on to others is the quintessential ability of a Film Noir character. Along with drinking and hardboiled narration.
