Shin Megami Tensei/Awesome Music
Shin Megami Tensei
- One of the most famously awesome songs of the series comes from the original: Ginza has to be one of the coolest songs in the series.
- The Battle Theme, which is pretty hard rocking for being one of the earlier games.
- The Boss Theme, of which the full version isn't heard in game until it's reused in Shin Megami Tensei If.... Before then, the first part of the song is just looped.
- Arcade, which was remixed admirably in Nocturne as the Ginza theme.
- The Law alignment's theme, quite fitting of the Messians (read: Christians in all but name).
- It got remixed in Nocturne - now even more awesome!
- The PSX version of the OST.
Shin Megami Tensei II
- The Chaos theme, which manages to sound both peaceful AND threatening.
- The Boss fight theme.
- Everyone dances furiously at the Disco, including a certain Mr. Thriller
- The Makai Overworld and Dungeon themes.
- The PSX version of the OST.
Majin Tensei II: Spiral Nemesis
- The map theme of Slum Tokyo: Smash Up
- Evolution, played in 2052
- The final map theme: Theme of Endless
- Deja Vu which is played before each mission
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
- Mysterious and foreboding, the opening is the perfect foreshadowing of what is to come.
- Fierce and bestial, Beelzebub's battle song will make you fear flies.
- The Reason boss battle song is as dignified as an angry god. Nothing says you're fighting the god behind an entire world's philosophy quite like that.
- A two-fer! Demon World Master lets you know who exactly is in charge, while Metatron's battle song does the same.
- And then there's Battle with Dante/Raidou.
- When you hear this song, you know that badassery is just around the corner.
- The Normal Battle theme. The fact that it's used during the Bonus Boss fight in Digital Devil Saga over the half dozen others themes is proof that it is that badass.
- The best part of the theme (which you don't get when listening to a single recording of it) is that it has multiple variations of the main riff that are chosen randomly during the actual game. It really helps to keep it sounding fresh.
- When you look death in the face, you don't hear yourself laughing. You hear this.
- With this immediately preceding. That plus this one that prefaces normal boss battles kindly inform the player that they are soooo going to die.
- And curiously enough, this is an actual boss battle remix version of the character naming theme from Shin Megami Tensei II! Yep, they made a naming theme into one that features Those Many Bosses. Bring My Red Jacket, please!
- This boss battle theme is pretty badass, too.
- There's also Large Map: Last Area. If there were ever a theme that would perfectly underscore a Power Walk, this would be it.
- Let's not downplay some of the other regular battle themes: World Map Battle goes for straight up rocking. Town Battle throws in a jazzy flair to complement the rocking. Amala Network Battle which is originally from Shin Megami Tensei If.. And finally, there's the Amala Bonus Dungeon Battle Theme.
- Get to the final boss and you get this.
- And before that, Last Battle -Before Transformation-, a track so out of place for a final boss it loops around all the way to the perfect fit.
- Metatron's battle theme. A perfect fit for the voice of god.
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
- From Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, we have The Fear of God. It's the random battle theme.
- You know you've got yourself a game with good music if the normal battle theme is crowning.
- And then we have the title screen music, where we see the Red Sprite, Blue Jet, Elve, and Gigantic racing toward the Antarctic storm that is the Schwarzwelt, while listening to this.
- The first dungeon music that plays is A Scorched Nation. The game has no pretenses about making it clear that you're entering hell.
- Take the Shield, Raise the Spear
- It doesn't end there, since when you fight an unknown enemy or a Mini Boss, you get An Honor Befitting That Name.
- At the lowest points of the game's story where you feel like you can't go on, you'll definitely need inspirational speeches and Morale.
- In the Master's Name, which plays whenever you're in a situation where shit just got real.
- Holy Miracle. Never before has the phrase "God is PISSED!" been more appropriate.
- And then there's Vehement Rage, the track for a sector boss.
- Why has no one put in The Tyrannical Hero? This is IMO the best battle them in the whole game, and it really captures the emotion of a battle to the death with Jimenez, pretty much your closest friend on the Red Sprite.
Persona
- Sure, the first Persona has its share of problems, like a translation resembling something a Reston Ebola victim might vomit up, however, there is one thing that makes the game such a cult hit, the boss battle song Dead Line. This troper thinks that it still beats the tar out of any other Persona musics.
- The remake did well with the last battle in the SEBEC chapter.
- Like the new music or not, the remake's OP song is damn catchy.
- The school theme from the remake captures the magic of exploring St. Hermelin perfectly.
- Though some people's mileage may vary, A Lone Prayer is very empowering battle music
- Awakening Legend from the original version of Persona, when a character awakens their Persona for the first time.
- The Velvet Room theme. Nuff said. Considering how it's used in later games, it might as well be the series' main theme.
- Tower of Thanatos for the remake which also appears as the final dungeon music for SEBEC route. Be very afraid...
- On the note of scary stuff, The Girl In Black is delightfully sinister.
- It doesn't matter. Both versions of Night Queen are undiluted awesome!
Persona 2
- While playing Persona 2: Innocent Sin, this troper got really fond of an awesome song that is, well, the Main Theme. Imagine his surprise when he finished the game and saw that the Main Theme was an instrumental version of the awesome ending theme, Kimi no Tonari. The game is filled with great music, but for some reason this tune in particular just stuck in this troper's head for a long, LONG while after he finished the game.
- For this troper it was Main Theme A, the other variation of the main theme, which really stood out. It certainly helps that these pieces of music are played during many a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming.
- Another often played during a Crowning Moment of Heartwarming is Reminiscence (Beloved). And two of the most catchy and awesome character themes are Maya's theme (including her sad version) and Yukino’s theme.
- Also, the remix of Maya's Theme that was used for Eternal Punishment.
- Once more Maya's theme (PSP versions)
- The remake opening is just awesome. The music that goes with it really helps!
- The song that plays when Maya Amano dies is very sad. Link here (Don't forget to put it in 480p) Be warned though, the title of the video is a spoiler.
- And don't forget the PSP OST. Here's the remade battle theme and it's AMAZING.(And put it in 720p for increased cool.)
- The Innocent Sin boss theme, in both the original and the PSP remake versions.
- Also Kashihara/Nyarlathotep's theme. Link here. Title of the video may spoil the game, not taking chances.
- Change Your Way, the ending theme to Eternal Punishment. Very inspiring and about the only vocal song in the series sung by an English singer.
- The title theme for the Innocent Sin remake. Approprate music for the darkest game in the Persona series.
- WHAT?! No metion of "Knights Of The Holy Spear" yet?! For shame! Here's Meguro's unused remix for the PSP.
Persona 3
- Aria of the Soul, a remix of the original Velvet Room theme. Dignified and mysterious, perfect for Igor, and so amazing that it's re-used in Persona 4. Then...
- The Battle for Everyone's Souls As mysterious, but now elevated to truly awesome.
- Or better yet, combine both this and the Reincarnation version for one hell of an epic boss theme.
- And to top it all off, the quad mix, epic distilled.
- The Battle for Everyone's Souls As mysterious, but now elevated to truly awesome.
- Heartful Cry from The Answer accompanies three of the most emotionally rending boss fights in the game.
- And for a personal dark horse favorite, there's Shadow, the theme as The Magician's attacking the dorm.
- Persona 3 Portable brings some new songs to the table, from the epic new opening Soul Phrase to the Female Protagonist's new battle theme and boss battle.
- Memories of You
- The Trinity Soul version is just as awesome.
- Holy crud, listen to this live version of 'Heartful Cry .' In fact, just listen to the whole live concert.
- Mass Destruction, the song when you fight random battles.
- You know what's even better than that? A dual-mix version
- This version, which plays during random battles of The Answer.
- Heck, how could you guys don't put this song yet Unavoidable battle especially with a fight against certain Bonus boss.
- Master of Tartarus deserves a mention also.
- Once you get to the last month of the game, the themes for the locations around the city get changed. And the city theme, Memories of the City is the best one of them all. The more somber-sounding theme really fits the darker look of the city, as well as the sheer weight of what the characters are preparing to do.
- Master of Shadow, the theme of the Moon Shadow bosses. Otherworldly awesome.
- Deep Breath Deep Breath, the song only plays during when you're on the train going to fight the first shadow. But it's still awesome.
- Don't forget it plays during Operation Babe Hunt!
- Darkness, the theme for the final boss fight of The Answer. Sounds a bit like "Divine Identity" (see the Digital Devil Saga section), and evokes the same feeling: "Let's go kick ass!"
- Snow Queen, a truly awesome remix of the Megami Ibunroku Persona song of the same name.
- Speaking of remixes, Maya's theme is a huge tearjerker, and especally even more if you know the game.
- Brand New Days, which is the P3 main screen theme. It also is the theme of choice for one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in the game.
Persona 4
- The boss theme I'll Face Myself (Battle) and the theme that plays after one of the protagonists gets their persona I'll Face Myself.
- The melancholic remix of it that plays when Dojima is in hospital.
- It gets better. This fan remix Aorchestral version, and has FREAKING BONGO DRUMS in the second verse!
- The melancholic remix of it that plays when Dojima is in hospital.
- The bad, good, and true (two themes for separate two phases) ending boss themes. A New World Fool, The Almighty, Fog/Kiri,and The Genesis respectively.
- The concert remix of The Almighty is almost certainly better than the original and is made of 100% epic.
- And of course, the regular battle theme Reach out to the Truth
- Heartbeat, Heartbreak the song that plays after school (while walking around town on rainy and foggy days), and Heaven, Nanako's dungeon theme music.
- If you liked Heaven, wait until you hear the epic dual mix, a combination of the original and the concert versions.
- Never More. The song alone is heartwarming.
- The opening track, Pursuing My True Self. It's the first thing you hear and sets the tone for the rest of the game.
- Backside of the TV. Just listening to that tune while preparing to rescue the next victim in the TV world...
- Sauna, a track befitting an adventure through a bathhouse.
- Your Affection, the cheerful, uplifting track that plays on sunny days.
- Corner of Memories. Players who've just come off of finishing P3 are liable to be struck with what can be described as nostalgia, due to the theme's similarity to Brand New Days.
- Long Way
- SMILE. You know you're about to have a Heartwarming Moment when this starts up.
- And the upcoming Animated Adaptation gives us it's opening theme: Sky's the Limit. Good luck getting this one out of your head.
- The anime also gives us Time for True Revelation, which plays whenever Kanji starts to kick tail.
- Not sure if this is the opening theme or the new battle music, but either way Make History from Persona 4 The Golden is excellent.
Persona 4: Arena
- The best way to describe Arena's music would be "lounge music meets rock" or basically "Blazblue meets Persona".
- Yu's theme and Aigis' theme, which are really kickass remixes to "Reach Out to the Truth" and "Heartful Cry", respectively.
- Yukiko's Theme kicks all kinds of ass with a combination of Japanese music, violin, and pure freaking ROCK. The best part is that the theme matches her completely.
- Yosuke's theme is a little slow, but really good and can even bring back memories of some old classic Guilty Gear tune to mind.
- Teddie's Theme Who knew a jazz theme would fit Teddie so well?
- Naoto's Theme Those trumpets, that guitar. When it hits that main part it becomes glorious.
- Kanji's Theme has a lot of epic electric guitar riffs, sounds like something that would be composed by Daisuke Ishiwatari.
- Newcomer Labrys' Theme is simply beautiful.
- Mitsuru's Theme sounds quite a bit like the rocking theme found in Dynasty Warriors. Which is awesome.
Devil Summoner
- Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs King Abaddon has New Battle.
- This troper prefers Battle ~ Raidou, the random battle theme from Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs The Soulless Army.
- The boss theme from Devil Summoner 2, Decisive Battle, is basically everything a boss theme should be.
- Fiend Battle
- Both Raidou games have Formidable Foe. It is glorious.
- What about the original series before the Raidou games came out:
- Boss Battle
Digital Devil Saga
- "Divine Identity", the song that plays during Digital Devil Saga 2's final boss battle.
- Hell, the normal battle music kicks a good amount of ass.
- So does the normal battle theme from the first game.
- When you take the normal battle theme from the first game, add MORE awesome to it, you get Hunting~Betrayal, one of the boss themes of the 2nd game.
- Hell, the normal battle music kicks a good amount of ass.
- Hunting~Compulsion deserves special mention for the guitar alone.
- Who knew that you could turn several simple melodies into one kickass battle theme that makes you feel like a real strategist?
- The final boss theme (of the "we are so fucked" variety) from the first game: Hari-Hara: 2nd Movement
- The airport theme from the 2nd game. One-Way Stairs. It starts out sounding like a fairly generic techno track, but around 0:30 it kicks into high gear.
Devil Survivor
- Demon Of Darkness, which plays during the opening and manages Soundtrack Dissonance without sounding any less epic.
- Pinch Battle, the stage theme for your Big Damn Heroes moments; you'll feel like a badass every time you hear it.
- Depending on what ending you got, Deep Darkness will make you feel like either a powerful god or a total jerk.
- Don't forget Last Decision, the final boss theme in most routes.
- And of course the main theme, in both vocal and instrumental flavours.
- Deep Night, the map music that plays during a boss fight, manages to sum up the battle in four words using music alone: "Shit just got real."
- Garuda, the map music that plays when you fight against the final boss, and the bonus boss. It manages to rock your socks off, and still maintain a majestic feel to it.
- Rival Battle, the wonderfully creepy map music that plays when fighting a formerly friendly character.
- Even the standard battle songs, Battle Beat and Aggressive Tune, are utterly awesome rock pieces.
- Soul Survive. The opening theme of Overclocked is just amazing.
Devil Survivor 2
- Mugen no Sekai, which can be translated variously as "Infinite World" or "Dream World". The opening theme of the game has a sweet and hopeful vibe to its deadly-sounding title.
- The Septentriones' themes, both the obviously-titled field theme Septentrion and the battle theme Break Out. The field theme is appropriate for when you're readying yourself to attack a incomprehensible enemy, but when you get to the actual battle theme, you realise just how much weight the battle holds.
- The remix of Septentrion used in the second phase of the final battle, Will of the Species, is truly excellent as well.
- Not to mention Desperate Situation. You're fighting against unfathomable odds, but you have awesome music to pull you through.
- A Gloomy Person. It's enough of a reason to talk to the Anguished One at every opportunity, even discounting the fact that his path is a "good" ending.
- No matter what ending you take, it feels good and fullfilling when you get this theme here to greet you.
Catherine
- Game just came out but the opening theme is awesome.
- Again, even if it's new it's inexcusable not to have It's a Golden Show on here yet.
- Revolutionary Etude would like to say hi.
- The Boss Chase Music is extremely catchy and something to climb to. Which helps since you'll be running away from hands, babies, and everything in between while it plays.
- The rest of the bosses, except for the True Final Boss, get Woman's Hand, which is all about cranking up the Nightmare Fuel, especially during the Shadow of Vincent fight.
