Rip Off Press is a, if not the seminal Underground Comics publisher located in San Francisco. It was founded in 1969 by Fred Todd, Dave Moriaty and cartoonists Gilbert Shelton and Jack Jackson primarily to function as a printing press for rock music posters, and published comics on the side. By 1972, ROP transformed into a publishing house, moving between two different locations, with separate warehouse space. One of these locations, which was part of a three-story block-square building housing over a hundred other businesses, burned to the ground in 1986, leading Todd to relocate Rip Off Press to Auburn, California. Since 1999, ROP comics have been sold primarily through the Internet due to a change in underground comics distribution.
