Resident Evil: A Change in Pace
Resident Evil: A Change in Pace (alternate title: Biohazard: A New Direction Taken) is a fanfic written by Snafu the Great. The fanfic is in the words of the author a alternate retelling of the the events from the games, with the author drawing inspiration from the films, the Wildstorm comics and the novels by S.D. Perry.
As expected, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine as the main couple of the series. The fanfic covers the events from Raccoon City to Kijuju, with the aforementioned twist, as certain events in the series play out differently than it does in canon. The story is currently ongoing, as it is in the the War Against Umbrella arc.
Tropes used in Resident Evil: A Change in Pace include:
- All There in the Manual: The R.P.D. profiles on Chris and Jill respectively.
- Badass Biker: Claire Redfield, who else?
- Badass Bookworm: Chris Redfield, hands down. Rebecca comes in a close second.
- Battle Couple: Chris and Jill, obviously.
- Boy Meets Girl: Thanks to a car accident, no less.
- But for Me It Was Tuesday: Christine Henri calls the Raccoon Outbreak and the deaths of its citizens a "minor setback." Jill is not pleased.
- But Not Too Foreign: In the story, Chris and Claire's grandfather immigrated to America from Scotland, while their mother is Dutch. Jill's father is Irish, but given who he is modeled after, it's fitting.
- Car Fu: Jill in a Humvee versus a Hunter. Jill won.
- Chekhov's Gun: The P20 serum in which saved Jill's life as a child.
- Chekhov's Skill: Chris training Jill. She comes to admit that she would have survived Raccoon City and the Spencer Mansion otherwise.
- Jill teaching Claire how to pick locks with a lockpick while she is a guest at the Redfield home.
- Cool Shades: Wesker, obviously
- Crowning Moment of Awesome: Claire beating Forest Speyer - Bravo Team's sharpshooter - in a shooting contest. Even Wesker is shocked.
- Dating Catwoman: Well, Jill is a reformed thief.
- Defeat Means Friendship: Jill loses to Chris during their spar, but comes to respect him for taking her seriously...despite him holding back as to not injure Jill seriously.
- Did Not Do the Research: In the official storyline, Jill is said to be an ex-member of the Delta Force. However, the U.S. Military does not allow women to join the Special Forces. The author got around that by having Jill undergo a two-week firearms and explosives training with said group while she was in the Army.
- Doomed Hometown: Raccoon City.
- Drives Like Crazy: Chris lampshades this face when he presents Jill with her new ride.
- Embarrassing First Name: Jill hates it when people call her by her real name, which is Jillianne. Only her dad can get away with it.
- Friends with Benefits: How Chris and Jill's relationship start off at first. They first start off in the S.T.A.R.S. Office. And later on Wesker's desk. Afterwards, they both agree on a actual relationship.
- Heel Face Turn: HUNK, of all people.
- I Call It Vera: The Samurai Edge Handguns.
- If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Claire makes it very clear of the consequences of Jill breaking Chris' heart.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Wesker at the hands of the Tyrant. That did not stick.
- Ink Suit Actor: A trademark of the author. Dick Valentine (Jill's father) is based off of Liam Neeson, the anchorwoman reporting on Raccoon's nuclear destruction is based off of Milla Jovovitch, Colonel Roland Graham is modeled after Bruce Greenwood (Capt. Pike from Star Trek), and Chris's British ex-girlfriend is based off of Sienna Guillory (who plays Jill in the live-action movies).
- It's Personal: HUNK's motives in defecting from Umbrella.
- Knife Nut: Chris is an expert in knife fighting. Vector considers him to be a worthy rival.
- Mercy Kill: Claire reveals to Chris that she delivered one to a zombified Stacey.
- Neck Snap: How we are introduced to HUNK.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: In the Code: Veronica flashback, Wesker does this to Chris, and later, Chris does this to Wesker himself.
- One Bullet Left: In her flashback, Jill loads a single bullet into Elran's pistol. He uses it to commit suicide rather turn into a zombie.
- Pre-Mortem One-Liner:
- Chris: "Game over, motherfucker."
- Jill: "So you want S.T.A.R.S., huh? I'll give you S.T.A.R.S., you son-of-a-bitch!"
- Rape as Drama: In her backstory, Jill was nearly raped by her ex-boyfriend. He tried to do it again after breaking out of prison and tracking her down to Raccoon City, but Chris made the save in the nick of time.
- In HUNK's case, the rape and murder of his girlfriend and Umbrella's assassination attempt on him led to his defection from Umbrella.
- The Reveal: Wesker drops the bomb on Jill while inside the Spencer Mansion. She was accidentally given an experimental serum as a child in place of a pneummonia medicine called P20 - the predecessor to P30. Jill had a rare immunodeficiency similar to an AIDS patient and originally would die before she reached puberty. Through a twist of fate, she was accidentally given an prototype ancillary serum called P20, which not only boosted her immune system, but bonded to her DNA, making her stronger and agile.
- The somersault takedown Jill uses on the robber is the same as the one she uses on Chris in Resident Evil 5.
- The name of the security guard who would later become the Elder Crimson Head is Douglas Smith, which is a combination of the last names of D. C. Douglas (who voiced Wesker) and Roger Craig Smith (who voiced Chris).
- The stand-off scene in which Chris disarmed a former government worker was inspired from Murder At 1600.
- Jill killing off the first Hunter is a reference to Hard Target.
- Chris using the line "Don't you trust your partner" is the same line Jill uses on him in Resident Evil 5.
- Chris using the Rolling Sobat and Jill using the Death Tower slam are from Street Fighter
- Rebecca spraying Chris in the face with bug spray is referenced from the S.P. Perry novel The Umbrella Conspiracy. Caliban Cove is also referenced in the fanfic as well. The name Stacey Kelso (who is Chris' second ex-girlfriend in the story) is from City of the Dead.
- Shown Their Work: The author researching the viruses used in the series, as it is shown in the meeting of the Umbrella executives in how the T-virus works. The nuclear destruction of Raccoon City also falls under this trope, as the author researched how a nuclear detonation actually worked.
- Side Effects Include...: Jill's eyes were originally brown. Wesker does tell her that she has nice blue eyes as a result of the side effects to P20.
- You Owe Me: Wesker tries to pull this on Jill during The Reveal. It does not work.
