Prom
A High School movie, made by Disney, about, well, Prom. Specifically, seven high school seniors (and three sophomores) and the drama and hilarity they go through during prom season. It was released in April 2011 (prom season).
Read a little more about it here.
Tropes used in Prom include:
- A Day in the Limelight: Lucas and Corey in the online prologue "Corey and Lucas For The Win". For reasons unknown, the events of the miniseries do not get mentioned during the events of the actual movie.
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: One of them does, anyway.
- Anguished Declaration of Love: Lucas does this to keep Simone from going to Prom, upon insistence from Lloyd. This eventually causes Simone to leave Prom to meet him at a concert.
- Aw, Look -- They Really Do Love Each Other: Happens to Nova and Jesse, when Jesse reveals the reason about his delinquent behavior.
- Book Ends: Not of the typical variety but the character Rachel is only present at the beginning and end of the film. She appears getting a picture of a dress from Nova in the beginning and then has romantic interaction with Lloyd at the end.
- Big Man on Campus: Tyler.
- Brick Joke: While enjoying some milkshakes, Jesse attempts to fight some customers who are causing some trouble for his mother (the waitress) only to be stopped by Nova. After a fight with Nova's dad, Jesse attacks them after leaving school.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Rolo seemed like this, until it turned out..
- The Cuckoolander Was Right: He was telling the truth.
- Dance of Romance: Obviously happens during the prom scene itself. Jesse and Nova do this, just when a depressed Nova was about to leave prom. While not during prom, Lucas and Simone share a slow dance when the latter manages to meet him after a secret concert. Mei and Justin also share this treatment, as well.
- Dawson Casting: 24-year old Thomas McDonell and 21-year old Aimee Teegarden portraying high school seniors Jesse and Nova respectively. Averted with Danielle Campbell, Nolan Sotillo and Cameron Monaghan, (Simone, Lucas and Corey) who's ages are somewhat close with their characters and real-life sophomores (at least for Danielle and Nolan; both are 16 to Cameron's 18).
- Deadpan Snarker: Jesse. Lloyd too.
Prom. It's like the Olympics of high school. You wait four years, three people have a good time, and everybody else gets to live on with shattered dreams.
- Disappeared Dad: Jesse's father, though whether he left them or died is never made clear.
- Earn Your Happy Ending: Jesse and Nova get together in the ending, and so do Lucas and Simone. Mei and Justin still end up going to prom together and Lloyd manages to meet a girl during prom.
- Downer Ending: Tyler gets this treatment, but consider his rather Jerkass mannerisms throughout the movie (especially with Jordan, Simone and to an small extent Lucas) and it makes sense. Could count as a Bittersweet Ending, since he becomes prom king to Jordan's queen.
- Foot Focus: The poster (shown above) highlights a girl's bare feet, having taken her shoes off to dance barefoot.
- Fridge Logic: Why do all the students ride a limo to the prom if the dance is taking place at the school gym? Renting a limo for a 5-10 minute drive is sort of extreme.
- Reality Is Unrealistic: It's a status thing. Plenty of teenagers have rented limos to even Homecoming dances, to show off.
- Friend Versus Lover: A slight example with Lucas between Corey (friend) and Simone (potential love interest). He manages to keep his friendship with Corey and hook up with Simone by the end of the movie, though.
- Girlfriend in Canada: Rolo. No one (especially Ali) believes him.
- Subverted when she actually shows up at Prom.
- Hey, It's That Guy!: 3, actually: Julie Taylor , Jessica and Toby are the recognizable ones.
- High School: Naturally.
- High School Dance
- High School Sweethearts: Mei and Justin, who knew each other since the eighth grade.
- Irony As He Is Cast: Nolan Sotillo portrays Lucas, a music geek who doesn't know how to play musical instruments. In real-life, Nolan is a talented musician who managed to pull off some good covers of well-known songs (just check out his performances on Youtube) and sang a song for the soundtrack, as stated below.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Jesse, naturally.
- Karma Houdini: The issue of Jordan and Tyler accidentally burning down the Prom decorations is never given any focus after Nova discovers it the next morning. Not only is this never given any mention during the duration is the movie, but they end up becoming prom king and queen. To think that the students and faculty could have thought of trying to find out who would have caused the fire in the first place...
- Lampshade Hanging: After Rachel tells Lloyd that it's sweet he brought his sister to prom, he asks "Where have you been?"... Which is actually a very good question, since she hasn't been on screen since the start of the film.
- Last-Minute Hookup: Nova with Jesse as well as Lucas with Simone.
- Loads and Loads of Characters: 12 named characters to be exact, who are part of the main pairings.
- Logo Joke: The logo becomes a scrapbook picture at the end. Humorously, the bottom of the logo (the Walt Disney byline) is made from the original logo's design.
- Maybe Ever After: The couples who got the hookup listed above, although time would tell if a sequel would be made to follow up on them (especially the sophomores).
- Meaningful Echo: When Lucas is asked by Tyler to go to his barbeque, Corey states that Lucas asking Simone to go with him is like "Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock". Near the end of the movie, Simone leaves prom to be with Lucas. When the two see her after their concert ends, Corey mentions "Hendrix. Woodstock." before Lucas and Simone proceed to slow dance in the parking lot. Also counts as Book Ends, considering that these two occur during the first and last major interactions between both Simone and Lucas. Another example occurs during Nova and Jesse's break-in of a rival school. When the two Almost Kiss, Nova states that "you were about to kiss me." [[spoiler:Near the end, Nova ends up saying the same thing to him, although they end up kissing for real.
- Meaningful Name: Guess what Rolo is seen eating is one scene
- Mistaken for Cheating: How we are introduced to Tyler and Jordan.
- Noodle Incident: Tyler and Simone's former romance. It's never really outright explained how it turned sour, although it's implied that his problems with women, so to speak, caused the relationship to go awry. Simone also describes him as the "one who wasn't available".
- Official Couple: Nova and Jesse, Mei and Justin, Lucas and Simone, Tyler and Jordan (later subverted).
- Race For Your Love: Lloyd convinces Lucas to do so for Simone. Luckily for him, it works.
- Romance Ensues: Between Nova and Jesse while working on the prom decors, and is somewhat sealed when the two break into another high school to check their prom out. Later subverted, when Nova's father orders Jesse to not bring her prom, only to be subverted yet again near the end of the movie.
- Romantic Comedy
- Runaway Prom Date: Simone leaves Tyler at Prom to be with Lucas.
- Serious Business: Prom. It's super serious.
- Shaggy Dog Story: Almost none of the characters or their subplots have any ties to each other, and as such end up being completely pointless unrelated distractions from the plot, with little if any conclusion.
- Shallow Love Interest: All of them, actually.
- She Cleans Up Nicely: Nova, Mei, Ali and Simone for prom, obviously.
- Stock Trailer Music: Katy Perry's "Firework". It also plays during the prom scene.
- The Cast Showoff: Nolan Sotillo (Lucas) and Thomas McDonell (Jesse) are both included on the movie's soundtrack and star in the music videos of said tracks. Nolan sang the song "We Could Be Anything", whose music video mixes footage from the song's recording as well as clips from the movie focusing on his character and Simone (Danielle Campbell), while Thomas' band "Moon" performs the song "Time Stand".
- Underdressed for the Occasion: During the end credit slideshow, Lucas was able to get into prom and get some pictures with Simone. This, of course, happens with the former still in casual attire and the latter all made up in her prom dress.
- Who Is This Guy Again?: A lot of the characters are never properly introduced, and a lot of the cast we never even learn their name.
- Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: Nova? Really? That's not a nickname or anything?
- Your Cheating Heart: Tyler's main character flaw, which causes both Jordan and Simone (for the second time, apparently) to ditch him. This is the subject of a deleted scene on the DVD, after Tyler asks Simone out to prom, when Jordan and Simone talk about their own relationships with him.
