Pokémon: The First Movie/YMMV

• Adaptational Villainy: While Mewtwo is a Tragic Monster Anti-Villain in both versions of the film, in the original version he becomes a cross between a Mad Scientist and a Serial Killer in an attempt to take his rage out on humans and naturally born Pokemon and validate his own genetically created clone existence. In the dub, he becomes an Omnicidal Maniac who wants to Kill All Humans and naturally born Pokemon in a Psychic Powers-fueled storm so that he and his Clone Pokemon can Take Over the World!
• Anvilicious: Whether the film's Aesop is "all life is equal" (Japanese version) or "fighting is wrong!" (English version), there's an entire scene with all the characters preaching about it from the sidelines.
• Crowning Moment of Funny: Ash's line about Vikings mostly living in Minnesota certainly is this for some people, especially Minnesota Viking fans.
• Critical Dissonance: Did poorly with critics, but ended up being the highest grossing anime film released in the United States.
• Draco in Leather Pants: Yes, Mewtwo is incredibly tragic and yes, he learns the error of his ways in the end. But some fans take this too far and use it to excuse his blatantly twisted and hypocritical actions throughout most of the movie.
• First Installment Wins: Most people know there were at least two movies, but most people (at least outside of Japan) don't know that there is a fourteenth movie, and counting.
• Fridge Logic: Ash's death is full of this. Why do Pokemon tears grant life? Why are all the Pokemon crying but none of Ash's friends? Why do the clones even care? Why does Mewtwo stop attacking? That would have been a perfect time to kill Mew.
  • Maybe he was too busy being "WTF"'d over the human child running into the middle of the battlefield to stop the fighting that got said same human child killed.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: Several people, including Hellfire Commentaries, have pointed out Mewtwo's similarity to Shadow the Hedgehog.
• Jerkass Woobie: Mewtwo.
• Magnificent Bastard: Also Mewtwo.
• Narm: A lot due to 4kids editing and script changing.
  • Of course, one person's narm is another person's Narm Charm.
• Tear Jerker: The part where Ash gets turned to stone, and poor Pikachu keeps desperately trying to wake him up... the sad music playing in the background just added more to the scene. The Japanese developers of the film apparently praised the US dub-added music for this scene as well.
