Phantasm (film)/Nightmare Fuel

Phantasm

  • The first scene of the movie opens with a man and a woman having sex at the cemetery. Once finished, the Woman then stabs the man to death with a dagger. Not too long after in the blink of an eye she turns into the Tall Man. Setting the mood for the over all series.
  • The entire funeral scene at Morningside Mortuary. While the funeral itself is a tearjerker for those that attend. Specifically Reggie and Jody, as the person who was killed was a friend and bandmate of theirs named Tommy. However it doesn't shy away from the creepy moments. While Jody waits for the funeral to begin, he checks on the crypts of his parents. He notices something moving past him before The Tall Man scares the hell out of him by sneaking up on him. He was only informing Jody of the funeral starting, but his sudden appearance, scary voice and him grabbing Jody is enough to scare anyone.

Tall Man: The funeral is about to begin. Sir.

  • Mike crashes the funeral while riding on his dirt bike through the cemetery. He keeps a distance so that Jody and Reggie don't see him, while spying on them. After the funeral ends and everyone leaves, Mike watches in horror, as he witnesses the Tall Man pick up the heavy casket along with Tommy's Corpse in one arm. As if that wasn't unpleasant enough, he notices something was watching him from behind one of the large head stones.
  • Mike follows Jody at a bar, where his older brother catches the eye of a lady in a lavender dress interested in him. Said lady happens to be the same woman that killed his friend, but neither Mike nor Jody know that. Mike follows them to the cemetery where Jody and the lady get started. While Mike spies he is scared by a small shadow in the woods, causing him to scream and run past the two. While that shadow alone was scary on it's own, Mike inadvertently saved Jody's life. While he was irritated at his little brother, spying and cock blocking him, had he not stopped and went after Mike, the Lady in Lavender would have killed him like she did Tommy.
  • Mike visits a fortune teller and her granddaughter, to talk about what he saw at Tommy's funeral. The atmosphere is creepy enough as the teller just sits there with a blank grin on her face, while her granddaughter speaks for her. After hearing his story, the Fortune Teller makes a black box appear on the table and through the granddaughter tells mike to stick his hand inside it. The box traps his hand causing it pain as he struggles to get it out. The granddaughter telling him "Don't fear." When Mike calms down, the box lets his hand go and it doesn't have a scratch on it. The granddaughter tells him, that this was a test, informing him that fear is what will kill him rather than anything else and that the pain he felt was all in his head. Mike pays the Fortune Teller, placing cash on the box. The box then disappears with the cash. When Mike leaves, the Fortune Teller then just breaks into creepy laughter.
  • The Sphere's first kill. Mike infiltrates the Mortuary to find out more about what has been going on with the Tall Man. As he wanders the corridor, he sees one of the Spheres coming towards him. He runs at first, but ducks at the last moment causing the Sphere to pass him by. When he tries to leave he is caught by one of the caretakers, who has him in a headlock. As if things can't get worse, the Sphere he dodged, comes back barrelling towards them both. Mike in a panic, bites the man's arm until he draws blood causing him to let him go. He ducks in time as the Sphere hits the caretaker. Two blades keep the sphere locked onto the man as a drill comes out and burrows into his head. Blood starts coming out of a hole on the other side of the sphere draining the man at a rapid pace. The man collapses dead with his last moments twitching and pissing himself.

Phantasm II

  • When Mike and Reggie go town to town, searching for the Tall Man and Liz, we get a small glimpse of what happens to the towns after Tall Man has long since abandoned them. The towns are completely destroyed with boards on every window of every building, from domestic homes to shops. The whole thing looking like a mix between The Tall Man's own rampage, along with the result of possible rioting and looting by remaining people whether they fled or stayed and died. As if things can't get worse from here, there is a shot of a cemetery completely robbed of bodies. In it's place rectangular shaped holes from the dug up graves. Which the duo have to trek through in their search carefully, lest they suffer a 6 foot drop. It's not at all helped by Reggie's depressing narration of the whole ordeal.

Reggie: There's no use trying to tell anybody. They'd lock us up and throw away the key. We'd spend a long time on the road. Northwest mostly. It wasn't hard to pick up his trail. The places he'd been, always looked the same. Small towns are like people. Some get old and die a natural death. Some are murdered. We have to be careful. Sometimes he sets traps for us.

  • Following that scene, Mike and Reggie explore a ravaged cemetery looking for the Tall Man. They are wary of what he can do, but they go in anyway. Upon reaching the basement, they see a cloaked figure. Initially mistaking it for a dwarf, they get their weapons out. Mike however uncovers the hood and see it's Liz. The girl they were searching for. She has tape on her mouth and is clearly scared. When Mike tries to ask what happened, Reggie notices something moving on her back under the cloak. They pull it back to see a worm like creature with The Tall Man's voice where her spine is supposed to be. Daring them to find him. Reggie clearly freaked out burns the body. It later turns out, that it wasn't Liz, but a specially made creature using her likeness. Not so subtly warning the duo, that the Tall Man knows they're looking for him.

Tall-Man Bug: You play a good game boy!! Come east if you dare!!
Reggie: GET THE FUCK BACK!!! -torches creature-

  • Liz and her sister are scene escorting their grandmother to a funeral home in Perigord, to grieve over their recently deceased grandfather. Much like the first movie it starts off as a sad moment, before Liz wanders away from the funeral home once the viewing begins. She ends up in a hallway similar looking to Morningside's Mortuary. Believing it to be a dream she hurts herself by digging her nails into her own hands, figuring otherwise. As a repeat of the first movie, the Tall Man grabs her from behind scaring her. Informing her of the Graveside Service. She leaves and it shows the Tall Man with her pin in his finger, licking the yellow blood off of it.

Tall Man: The Graveside Service is about to begin.

  • Around the same time the above scene was happening, Father Meyers, who was initially stoic throughout the whole funeral; was drinking nervously as he approached the grandfather's corpse. Praying to god for forgiveness for what he was about to do. While he didn't say it all, it's implied he's well aware of the Tall Man and his intentions with the corpses. In an attempt to make sure Tall Man doesn't have access to one more, he takes out a dagger and stabs the grandfather's corpse in the heart. While the act itself has already hurt the priest emotionally, he was especially shocked when he realized he did it in front of the still grieving Grandmother, who justifiably faints.

Father Meyers: Forgive me Lord. I must end this sacrilege. I can't close my eyes to the things I've seen. It must be stopped.

  • In the next scene, Father Meyers is seen at his home, drunk and paranoid. Trying to reassure himself of the outside noises and dismissing them as wind. When he hears something knock on the door, he ignores it at first, but out of exasperation goes to investigate. Only to find himself face to face with the Liz' Grandfather, reanimated and sporting the stitches the mortician put over his mouth. As if that wasn't bad enough, Liz' Grandmother tries to get a well good rest after the funeral only to wake up next to her husband's corpse. The next morning, Liz goes to check on her only to find her gone. In her place, the pin she stabbed Tall Man with, still covered in his blood and a telepathic message.

Tall Man: If you want her. Come tonight.

  • When Liz goes to find her grandmother, she wanders the mortuary. Getting a first hand glimpse of the embalming process which involves the same yellow liquid that Tall Man and his minions bleed being injected into them after their blood is taken out. As well as narrowly avoiding a Graver. A gas mask wearing mook that was helping Tall Man harvest the corpses. As she wanders around Father Meyer is seen hiding as well, implying he got away from her undead grandfather and was snooping the mortuary on his own volition. As he approaches a room with a small coffin, he opens it out of curiosity. We don't see what's in there, as it's covered in metal mesh. However when Meyer pokes at it, something sharp pokes his finger. Having seen enough, Meyer tries to leave, blessing the mortuary and it's dead inhabitants on the way. Tall Man steps into view and Meyer turns around to confront him. To show how powerful he is, Tall Man telekinetically hangs him by his own cross and rosaries. The cross itself being inverted. He lets him go and the camera zooms into the coffin, which opens revealing two Silver Spheres and one Gold Sphere.

Tall Man: They have no need of your services.
Father Meyer: Who are you, to question the word of God's servants?
Tall Man: You think that when you die, you go to Heaven. YOU COME TO US!!
