- Hey, It's That Guy!: Timothy Hutton as Conrad and Judd Hirsch as Dr. Berger. Both were nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and Hutton won.
- Playing Against Type: Mary Tyler Moore in the film version. Her portrayal of Beth as a cold control freak came on the heels of years of playing the appealing, slightly dippy Laura Petrie and Mary Richards. It took people by surprise, and some people actually resented her for doing this so soon afterwards.
- What Could Have Been: Hirsch got the role of Dr. Berger after Gene Hackman turned it down.
