Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit/YMMV
- Tear Jerker: Plenty, but especially the scenes where Jeanette finds out that Elsie has died and that Melanie betrayed her, told the pastor that she didn't love Jeanette, and went on to live a conventional heterosexual life while pretending that her affair with Jeanette didn't mean anything.
- Unfortunate Implications: Near the end of the novel, Jeanette states that men are selfish and greedy and therefore unfit for romantic love. It is heavily implied that she could be bisexual but that she chose lesbianism to avoid evil men.
- Winterson says that she is bisexual but picked women because she would have found it impossible to do her work with a man around.
