Ninotchka/Trivia

  • Banned in China: Banned in the Soviet Union, for obvious reasons. Also, a U.S. re-release in the early 1940s was canceled on the grounds that the U.S.S.R. was now considered a World War II ally.
  • Hey, It's That Guy: The Russian commissar to whom Ninotchka reports is Dracula. Buljanoff (Felix Bressart) is Greenberg from To Be or Not to Be.
  • Lzherusskie: Ninotchka is played by Greta Garbo, who was Swedish. The actors playing the three diplomats were German. Bela Lugosi (who played the commissar) was Hungarian.
  • Playing Against Type: Garbo Laughs!
    • It's also one of the very few non-horror films Lugosi appeared in (though he's still pretty scary).
    • That tagline was a Call Back to Garbo's first sound picture, Anna Christie, which was marketed with the tagline "Garbo Talks!".
