Metal Gear Solid/Trivia

• Actor Allusion: This isn't the first time that David Hayter voiced a character who was the byproduct of a Government-funded supersoldier project.
  • Likewise, Liquid's attire resembled that of Colonel Silver. Both characters were also voiced in the Japanese version by Banjo Ginga.
  • Not in the series itself, but in Super Smash Bros Brawl, if using the Codec when fighting Captain Falcon at Shadow Moses, Otacon and Snake will reveal that they are both fans of the character. In the Japanese version, Otacon and Captain Falcon are both voiced by Hideyuki Tanaka.
• Hey, It's That Guy!/Voice: David Hayter, the voice of Solid and Naked Snake, wrote (among other things) the scripts for the first two X-Men movies and the Watchmen movie.
  • Hey Its That Guyver. Hayter was credited as Sean Barker (his character in Guyver) in the demo version of the game. In released version, this is no longer the case.
    • Hayter is also said to have brought back most of the English cast for MGS all by himself for The Twin Snakes. Essentially, he offered up half his pay check so they'd get paid more.
    • Also, in Japan Snake is Anavel Gato, the Nightmare of Solomon.
  • Dr. Naomi Hunter is, depending on which version of the game you're playing (since her accent changes from MGS original to TTS), either Bastila Shan or Electro Ovilo. Of course, they're both Jennifer Hale, who is also known as Fem!Shepard, Samus Aran, and, well... a lot of other people.
    • She and Emma Emmerich share the same voice actress.
  • Liquid Snake was Leonardo. The turtle, you know, not DaVinci. He's also Kratos. And Cam Clarke.
  • Colonel Campbell sometimes uses the alias Paul Eiding and is also Grandpa Max, pretty much every old man in the Capital Wasteland, Hojo. He also sometimes masquerades as some blue guy called Aldaris who would like to remind you that you must Construct Additional Pylons.
  • Mei Ling, also known as Kim Mai Guest, has also been Lian Xing, Isabella Keyes, and Subaru.
  • Revolver Ocelot is also known as, believe it or not, Elroy Jetson.
  • Sniper Wolf (Tasia Valenza) has also been Poison Ivy and Spider-Woman though, really, neither of these is a stretch.
  • In the original release of the game, Donald Anderson (the DARPA chief) and Gray Fox were the same person - also known as Greg Eagles, who also played Afro's father and Sulik. In the remake, the latter became Rob Paulsen, who was also Anomen and Pinky.
• Meryl Debuted In Metal Gear Solid: Not that you'd know it if you weren't Japanese.
• Serendipity Writes the Plot: A proper boss fight between Snake and Decoy Octopus was planned for the game, but the concept had to be scrapped due to the PlayStation's technical limitations, leaving Octopus as The Unfought who gets unceremoniously killed by FOXDIE while in disguise as the DARPA Chief. The concept was eventually resurrected three games later in Metal Gear Solid 4 for the Laughing Octopus boss fight.
• Throw It In: Gray Fox's presence as the Cyborg Ninja, not to mention the entire concept of the Cyborg Ninja, was not originally supposed to be in the game: Yoji Shinkawa suggested that they add in the concept because it seemed cool.
• What Could Have Been: Hal Emmerich/Otacon's appearance was supposed to be more indicative of a combination of Dennis Nedry and Michael Moore (IE, an overweight slob with a baseball cap and always eating a chocolate bar). The design used in the final version was pitched in by Yoji Shinkawa as a way to rebel against it.
  • Decoy Octopus was supposed to have a boss fight, but it was scrapped due to them not being able to do what they wanted with it. Aspects of the fight were used in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in the Laughing Octopus fight.

The Twin Snakes

• Doing It for the Art: David Hayter gave up half of his paycheck so that the entire cast of the original game could be reunited to reprise their roles in The Twin Snakes.
• Playing Against Type: Rob Paulsen plays Gray Fox. Knowing Paulsen's usual roles as comedic characters, his playing as Gray Fox, as well as doing it roughly in-character due to Gray Fox being a very serious character can come off as a shock.
• Serendipity Writes the Plot: David Hayter has mentioned in an interview that the reason why the dialogue had to be re-recorded for The Twin Snakes was because all the original dialogue was recorded in an apartment that had been converted into a recording studio. With the GameCube's much improved sound card, the player would have heard the traffic outside.
  • Some of the voice clips still needed to be re-recorded, since they made reference to specific controls and button functions of the PS1 controller. It wouldn't have made much sense to hear Ocelot say the "press the circle button repeatedly" in a GameCube game.
