Zizek ties the MacGuffin to desire within Lacan's take on psychoanalysis. The MacGuffin is "the objet petit a, the lack, the leftover of the Real setting in motion the symbolic movement of interpretation, a void in the centre of the symbolic order, a pure semblance of the 'mystery' to be explained, interpreted" (The Sublime Object of Ideology, p. 185).
