For a long time, there was some controversy on why pterosaurs managed to achieve larger sizes than birds. The general consensus, aside from the existence of air sacs on the wing membranes, is the fact that they took off in all fours like bats, using a catapult like motion of the forelimbs, generating more power and not needing to waste energy on heavy backlimbs. This means bats could evolve to get bigger, and that some people are already investigating on ways in which aircraft could waste less energy by using this method
