Funk Rock
The rhythm-oriented grooves of Funk plus the Epic Riffs of rock. Due to this simple combination, it was the first fusion genre to appear, way back in The Seventies.
Examples:
- Jimi Hendrix - The Trope Maker. "Little Miss Lover" is arguably the Ur Example of funk rock.
- Parliament-Funkadelic
- Trapeze
- Mother's Finest
- Talking Heads - They comparatively leaned towards a pure Funk sound with New Wave and Afrobeat influences, but they still count.
- Prince & the Revolution
- Several of his associate bands like The Time and Mazarati.
- Rick James
- Lenny Kravitz (possibly).
- The Isley Brothers - Some would argue that the Isley's are the Ur Example.
Punk Funk
Appeared in the late 1970s in the UK, can frequently overlap with Post Punk. Much less funk-oriented than either funk-rock or -metal, more experimental/dissonant/noisy. Arguably mutated into what we now know as dance-punk.
Examples:
- Gang Of Four
- A Certain Ratio
- Orange Juice
- The Pop Group
- The Contortions
