I now think that the ability to tell The Canonical Story isn't just the privilege of the writer. It's an agreement from the audience to accept The Story, if the Storyteller promises to know what the story is. If the Storyteller doesn't know, then that contract is broken. As surely as if the author died before finishing the book, there can be no canonical end to the story.
