A smart writer hooks in an actor by providing a dramatic entrance. If the writer does not care about hooking an actor, the stuff is not going to play well.

A strong entrance has several components. The character has to be in frame alone. The introduction of the character has to imply a major change to the situation as it is presently understood by the audience. It has to have a zinger line.
