Dragonaut: The Resonance

Jin Kamishima is going to go on a journey to the stars with his family, until the rocket is caught in a sudden accident. Only Jin is saved. Several years later, he meets up with a mysterious girl named Toa and finds himself getting involved into the actions of International Solarsystem Development Agency, or ISDA, and their unit called the Dragonauts. These Dragonauts, by forming a bonding with one of the dragon eggs that appeared on Earth in a ceremony called the Resonance, gain both a friend and a pilot to fight against the planet of Thanatos that has mysteriously appeared. Jin and Toa, along with newly born dragon Gio, find themselves involved in this.

No, it is not affiliated with The World of Darkness, no matter how much the title looks like it.

Tropes used in Dragonaut: The Resonance include:

• A-Cup Angst—Akira, which comes with being the only "flat" female in a show full of extremely busty ones.
• Absolute Cleavage—Machina, she even manages to combine this with Underboobs.
• Author Appeal—Makoto Uno illustrated the original character designs for this series so that explains two things.
• Assimilation Plot—Thanatos's ultimate solution.
• Bad Moon Rising—Thanatos, which is also a giant dragon.
• Barehanded Blade Block—At least twice, in fights between Gio and Garnet.
• Battle Butler—Amadeus, Sieglinde's dragon.
• Beach Episode—On the Moon. Sure, why not.
  • And again, on Mars. This episode takes place only a few miles from the enemy's base—the same base that heroes just escaped from a few moments earlier. Said enemies are also pursuing the heroes. Oh well! Plenty of time to strip and play in the mine shaft sewer!
• Boobs of Steel—Garnet, who has the largest chest of the female characters and does most of her fighting in close quarters
• Bond Creatures—Dragons.
• Bridge Bunnies—Ryouko, Saki and Megumi, the ISDA trio.
• Buxom Is Better—According to the tagline.
• Clasp Your Hands If You Deceive: Prince Ashim.
• Conspicuous CG
• Damsel in Distress—Toa, perhaps a little more often than she should be.
• Diving Save / Taking The Bullet Sword—Akira resulting in a fatal wound at the hands of Garnet.
• The Dragon—Garnet, in that she's Ashim's right hand woman and an actual dragon.
• The Dulcinea Effect—In reverse. Toa's known Jin less than a day (and probably talked to him for less than two hours) before she's taking bullets for him, stating her love and making promises to come back for him like she's known him for years.
  • That's because she felt bad about accidentally killing his family, so she saved him from that accident, then saved him again 2 years later and stood by his side afterwards.
• Eyepatch of Power—Kazuki. His scar-patch only makes it look like he's wearing a thong on his head.
• Fan Service - Unusually, this featured cheesecake AND beefcake.
  • Megumi lampshades this by pointing out how nice it is to be in zero-gravity when you have a rack like hers.
• Hey, It's That Voice!—The entire SOS Brigade shows up. Also expect to hear Light, Archer, Fate, and Natsuki as well.
  • Relationship Voice Actor—The two lead characters are played by Daisuke Ono and Minori Chihara.
• Gainaxing—Impossible to avoid considering the chest size of some of the characters but Episode 5 deserves special mentioning. How Garnet Avoided a Wardrobe Malfunction the for the whole episode is a mystery.

• High School AU—The Baker's Dozen episode opens on an unusually cast trailer for one of these. Howling Star is a delinquent who falls in love with Toa, and everyone else has random roles. The dragons are somehow still involved.
• Hot-Blooded—Howling Star, Raina's dragon. He can also form a drill with his wings.
• Hot Springs Episode
• If I Can't Have You Then No One Will: Asim to Toa.
• Important Haircut—Kazuki, not that it makes him look any more menacing.
• Karma Houdini—Kazuki's actions - especially when he recklessly opened fire on Jin near the spaceport and damaged the launch equipment while a shuttle containing the rest of his unit was launching—should have gotten him courtmartialed.
  • Ashim's actions are blatant acts of war (One of which could very well have ended all life on Earth), but nobody makes any real effort to call him on it until the Dragons go to rescue Toa from him, and wreck most of Mars in the process. At which point everyone blames the Dragons rather than the guy who'd been deliberately provoking them for most of the series.
• Line-of-Sight Name—Toa and Gio.
• Loads and Loads of Characters
• Meganekko/Paper-Thin Disguise: Toa during the several months living incognito with Jin and Gio.
• Minor Injury Overreaction—Okay, well he did get blown up in the process, but Kazuki's complaining about what turns out to be a small scar (thanks to the Dragons functioning as pretty good Meat Shields) falls under this.
• Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: This series is an ecchi action sci-fi mecha romance series containing alien robot human-shapeshifting dragons. It also has a bit of Mystery Horror in the start, Slice of Life in the middle and drama at the end. Yup, just like that.
• The Ojou—Sieglinde, as Amadeus helpfully reminds you. Constantly.
• Our Dragons Are Different—Dragons gliding IN SPACE. Sure, why not.
• Personality Swap—Some Applied Phlebotinum (Lightning Can Do Anything) in the Baker's Dozen episode causes all the dragons to have their personalities reversed. Amadeus becomes lazy, Machina becomes a Delinquent (meaning Yuko Goto gets to act closer to how she really is), Garnet becomes submissive, Gio and Widow are making jokes and Howling Star is a coward. Otohime, being The Generic Guy, does not have any personality change, and is distressed about it. Toa, however, turns herself into a flirty Catgirl.
• Pietà Plagiarism—A lot.
• Pluto Is Expendable—Thanatos was going to crash into Earth, but Pluto was in the way first.
• Power Nullifier—The CSS (not that kind of CSS) fields that limit dragons from assuming their true form.
• The Power of Love—Saves the day ultimately.
  • It briefly becomes Arc Words in episodes 15 and 16. Among other things, The Power of Love can break reinforced glass, apparently.
• Quirky Miniboss Squad—Lindwurm Unit.
• Real Men Wear Pink—Well, they certainly tried with Gio by giving him a frilly pink apron when he, Jin and Toa are living peaceful lives for a short while. Like most things in the show, it only came across as silly.
• Red Eyes, Take Warning—All dragons have red eyes, though how menacing they are varies.
• Redemption Equals Death—Poor Nanami.
• Rival Turned Evil: Kazuki subverts it since the rivalry with Jin over Gio was only in his mind.
• Romantic Two-Girl Friendship—Akira and Machina.
  • Which makes it even more heart-wrenching when Akira is killed literally moments after pretty much stating this outright.
    • Although, in the end their spirits fly away together, smiling with the knowledge that dragons and humans can finally live in peace. The implication seems to be that dragons continue to exist after death.
• Slouch of Villainy: Prince Ashim.
• Time Skip—Several months get skipped roughly in the middle of the series.
• Tomboy and Girly Girl—Akira and Machina.
• Unstoppable Rage—Machina.
• We Named the Monkey "Jack"—Amadeus is named after Sieglinde's dog from when she was a kid.
• We Used to Be Friends: Jin and Kazuki.
• White-Haired Pretty Boy: Prince Ashim fits the bill to a T.
• World of Buxom -- Sorry Akira .
• You! Get Me Coffee!—Done to Megumi in the middle of a dramatic moment.
