Clear Qualia
Clear Qualia (Kuria Kuoria in Japanese) is a manga by Minari Endou, the same mangaka who brought us Maria Holic and Hatenkou Yuugi.
Summary: In a distant Island, people suffer from a strange disease called "Pinocchio". This disease causes the patient's limbs to rot, and before long, leads to death. But victims can have the disease cured by using artificial limbs or "exchanging" limbs of people with special antibodies. These people with the antibodies, who only exist one in 10,000, are called "Doner", and their bodies considered national treasures. One day, Dorothy, a Doner, exchanges her precious right eye for a male Plastica, a robot servant, who was about to get thrown away. Their meeting begins a story of a strange woman and her strange Plastica.
- Accidental Pervert: Dorothy, when inviting her plastica to share a bed with her.
- Applied Phlebotinum: Several of the characters view Doners this way. This is why Dorothy being kidnapped is such a Running Gag.
- Artificial Human: Plasitcas to an extent.
- The cat "The Factory Manager" too.
- Ax Crazy: The medical plastica (Rod).
- Eliza, even more so after finding out that Dorothy was a Doner.
- A literal dude wielding an axe too.
- Blatant Lies: Rod introduces himself as a plasitca.
- Captain Obvious: Rod.
- What should Ponkotsu do about his hand he sacrificed as a gesture to Dorothy?
Rod: "Stick back it on with tape?"
- Chainsaw Good: We see Rod wielding one and saying he wants to kill Dorothy's plastica.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Dorothy.
- She jumps out of a window and lands on top of Ponkotsu to be cute like Rapunzel.
- Crapsack World: The setting is a world where 99,999 out of every 100,000 people are afflicted with Pinocchio syndrome and the others are donors. Well, the donor part sounds good, but their existence sounds a little bad, too. Especially since later on that Doners are targets of kidnappings at the same time as Eliza had kidnapped Dorothy.
- Also, Parental Abandonment is commonplace.
- Dark Messiah: Eliza tries to do this for her brother.
- Actually Rod was revealed to be a Doner also later on, but he is good with Blatant Lies.
- Deadpan Snarker: Rod complains about everything.
- Deus Ex Machina: A dude Dorothy knows / believes in the goodness of, just saved the from an Axy Crazy guy that was kidnapping her. He appered out of nowhere in a car.
- Double Entendre: The reason why you should not use the word "slave" in front of children.
- Also, the whole thing with Eliza wanting Dorothy for her body. Les Yay.
- Lampshaded by Dorothy switching to the word "Subordinate" later on, which has the same literal meaning, but no Double Entendre.
- Elegant Gothic Lolita: Dorothy's mode of dress. She also wear opera length gloves too.
- Eternal Prohibition: Several characters no matter how young drink.
- Subverted, as it was in the house of a Yakuza.
- Every Japanese Sword Is a Katana: Rod also has an uspecified sword.
- Eyepatch of Power: Not in the normal sense. They just remind you of Dorothy being The Messiah.
- Fan Nickname: Rod for Rodbart.
- Eye Scream: The manga starts with this as the first thing you read.
- Freudian Excuse: The whole big Crapsack World itself.
- Also for Eliza, her Ill Boy brother.
- Friend to All Living Things: Dorothy, not explicitly but implied.
- Hypocritical Humor: Dorothy's plastica teasing her about not being able to see that well because she has only one eye.
- Ill Boy and Ill Girl: The vast majority of humanity. Especially Odette.
- I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: Averted as the safety was on. Becoming a Running Gag.
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Rod: "What happened in the last chapter?"
- Also Ponkotsu also call Rod a supporting character.
- Les Yay: Eliza kidnapping Dorothy.
- A better example is Odette hugging and confessing to Dorothy.
- Love Makes You Crazy: Eliza.
- Love Makes You Evil: Eliza.
- Meaningful Name: Dorothy tries naming her plastica Koshi-san and Tsubu-san. After bean paste, and her bandages.
- Rod throws Ponkotsu at him as a slur. Dorothy being a Cloudcuckoolander thinks its cute and it sticks.
- Also, "The Factory Manager" for the cat revealed to be mechanical.
- I look it up. Dorothy is short for Dorothea, greek for "Gift to God". Especially meaningful when you consider her personality.
- Not So Stoic: Rod, due to Character Development.
- Not What It Looks Like: Eliza trying to harvest Dorothy's organs.
- Dorothy wakes up Dorothy: "Why am I tied up, Eliza?" Eliza: "You are wake. I planned on finishing up while you were unconscious." Les Yay too. Organ harvesting or lesbian rape.
- Not with the Safety On, You Won't
- Orphanage of Fear: The Doner Centre, apparently.
- Parental Abandonment: Eliza's orphan due to their extreme pinocchio syndromes.
- Also, Dorothy as she has a Guardian rather than parents, probably her Doner status kept her from being an orphan.
- Psycho Lesbian: Eliza, if you interpret her that way.
- Running Gag: Slave being a part of the children's vocabulary thanks to Dorothy.
- Also, Rod and Ponkotsu and pointing guns at each other.
- Also, Dorothy being kidnapped.
- Sexy Backless Outfit: Some of Dorothy's outfits have low backs.
- She Is Not My Girlfriend: Other way around, Dorothy calls her palstica her Slave. He interprets it as a Double Entendre.
- Shout-Out:
- Pinocchio
- "Rapunzel"
- Roman Holiday
- The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. She is Dorothy after all.
