Chrono Crusade/YMMV

These are the subjective tropes for the anime and manga series Chrono Crusade.

  • Alas, Poor Villain:
    • Aion somewhat has this in the manga--he and Chrono have a heart-to-heart chat before their final battle. His motivations are still portrayed as twisted, but at the same time many readers sympathize with his reasons.
    • Fiore--In the anime she dies trying to get back to Aion with Joshua. In the manga she's frozen in crystal trying to protect Joshua after defying Aion's orders to kill him.
    • Rizelle--Mildly, she laments her unrequited love for Aion as she dies, making her death scene somewhat sympathetic.
    • In the manga Genai's dying words indicate he's going to the afterlife to meet with Rizelle again.
  • Canon Sue: Mary Magdalene to a certain degree, of the Purity Sue variety.
  • Critical Research Failure: Not once but twice (maybe more) Brooklyn is spelled wrong in title cards in the anime. Also, both versions have Rosette and Chrono go on a misson in a casino on the Las Vegas Strip--even though the first casino on the Strip wasn't built until 1931, several years after both versions are set.
  • Crowning Moment of Awesome: Manga: the fight between Rosette and Joshua was pure, unadulterated awesome. Joshua steals one of Rosette's guns and time-freezes her shooting arm, so she kicks him in the head, steals back her gun with her other hand, and then shoots him anyway.
  • Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: Several.
    • "The place Chrono could go back to was decided four years ago!" by Rosette to demons that wanted Chrono back to their side. Just to name one.
  • Crowning Music of Awesome: Anime: Try listening to Tsubasa Wa Pleasure Line without feeling the least bit emotional.
  • Evil Is Sexy: Aion, particularly the anime in which he exploits his sex appeal to both draw in allies and screw with the minds of his enemies.
  • Fetish Fuel Station Attendant: Shader is a big-breasted Perky Hot Scientist Meganekko Catgirl with No Sense of Personal Space.
  • Mind Game Ship: Nearly all Aion/Chrono fic portrays the pairing as this.
  • Moe:
    • Chrono, considering the horrible luck he has...
    • Azmaria's main purpose in the anime and a huge factor to her character in the manga as well.
    • Joshua as a kid he seems to be--a bright young boy with feelings of inadequacy and constant illness. When he's older he can sometimes be this way, too, although the fact that he's blissfully working for the villain and absolutely off his nut seems to invoke the opposite reaction in some people.
  • No Yay: Joshua/Fiore (which also seems to imply Joshua/Rosette), Aion/Chrono, and the love triangle between Aion, Rizel and Jenai.
  • Purity Sue: Mary Magdalene, particularly in the manga--although it doesn't necessarily make her unlikeable.
  • Tear Jerker: Both the anime and the manga have an ending that causes the tears to flow. Chrono's backstory is another tear-jerking moment.
  • The Woobie: Chrono goes through a ton during the series, particularly taking his backstory into account.
  • Woolseyism: ADV's English dub of the anime added carefully researched 1920's slang into the character's dialogue, and cast an actress reasonably versed in German as Satella.
